hello everyone ,

great site and im admiring many of your works.

I build fishing rods as a very small sideline and Im playing with offering a somewhat original "Trout" small utility knife.

Im toying with a sheath that will work with a fly fishing vest too but no Ideas yet.

I was originally thinking doing a full tang kit or my own design and match the reel seat wood to the knife handle scales, but I like my other Idea better.

I would do a Pukko style knife and make the grip match the rod grip and perhaps also use a wood spacer that matches the reel seat wood
I can also do a decorative thread wrap on say a plastic (micarta)spacer to match the rod color and of course a fly can be inlayed in the butt , LOT of possibilitys.

the big issue right now for my planning is Blades,

I know the ready made fin blades are laminated carbon.

1) are there any similar pre made in stainless even if there not laminated? I dont think carbon would be popular with fisherman.

2) for a small say 3" utility blade like im thinking would an 8" wheel do a proper hollow grind. (No knife grinder any more but Maybe at some time again if I get going).

3) if I cut my own SS blades ATS34 or 440C what would be the best way to harden as these blades will be small and hidden tang style.

Ive never worked with other than hardend SS so should I send out or can I torch harden/salt bath Like I did with D2.

many thanks and happy grinds

Wow Ripper,

That's one of the nicest collections of ready to build blanks I've seen.

John,

If you are going to build some from scratch, I'd go with the ats34 (better steel than 440c I feel). For hardening you can send the blades to Texas Knife Supply, Knife & Gun Supply has someone they work with, and of course the man: Paul Bos.

An 8" wheel is fine for thinner, narrow blades.

One thing I've wondered on those Nordic style blades is the narrow bevel. Like these:

helle-blade-1.jpg

Looks flat ground, but such a thick cross section! Doesn't appear you'd get many sharpenings off those. Or are they hollow ground on a 4" wheel? I may be Norwegian, but I never could figure out that grind.

Now, you have me going John. I've always wanted to build a handy fishing, neck knife deal. Hmmmm, I have some thin S30V around here some where ......

About those bevels, that's a traditional Scandinavian grind and there usually isn't much of a secondary edge bevel. Ideally the whole bevel is laid flat on the stone when sharpening, but in practice it is tipped up slightly to maintain the initial edge and the whole bevel is laid flat only when a new edge needs to be worked onto the blade.

Some Helle blades are lamintated ss, with the outside of 18/8 ss which is very corrosion resistant. See Ragnar's site listed above for ready made blades. Many of the Scandinavian grind blades have a shallow hollow grind on the bevel and will get very sharp.

Hey Ripper and Steve,

thanks for the info again this site is like the rod build site I go on Very helpful.

looks like that supplier is a good way to start. ill have to do a prototype but I think a fin design is the way to go for a fly fishing companion.

HMM I have the grip concept, I know the blade size and Now the Most challleging part (besides getting started) the most challenging part
will be to make the knife the right size and a sheath that will work with IE Hang, clip ... onto a fly vest, wader straps... but not look like a piece of swat gear and of coarse not be affected by water.

Kydex comes to mind but its kina high tech (I love my kydex sheaths for my dive knives)but Fly fisherman are a finnicky bunch (myself included) need style and function with that crowd.

Hmmm More later,

guys thanks again and many thanks to you steve

your all a great help.

Maybe you would like to try www.Brisa.fi , there you can find knives also for fishing.
Also Finnish Puukko blades are available with all kinds of handle materials.
Good luck and send some pic's to see how it went!
