I'm trying to decide on a new go-to hard use fixed blade knife. Uses will be mainly bushcraft and hunting. I like a short blade around 3-4".
I was hoping to keep the price under $100. I'm open to suggestions but i think ive narrowed my choice down to the SCAR lil hornet vs Ontario Ranger Falcon vs Esee or ontario 3 vs Fallkniven F1. All seem to have gotten great reviews, but theres less info available on the SCAR lil hornet and the Falcon. What do ya'll think? Oh and if anyone has good suggestions for knives with scandi grinds within my price range, I'm all ears.

I have the Ontario Falcon. It is a thick knife with a blade of 1/4" 5160 steel. But the flat grind gives it a fairly good edge for cutting, but the thicker spine can make it harder to cut, get hung up, through something like cardboard and making a continious cut. It works to do that as I have used it for this, but a thinner blade would make it easier on the hand I think.

Mine came with a good edge, good edge grinds that are even on both sides and meet where the should meet. The only thing I do not like is the sheath, not that it is a bad one, I just would rather have a kydex, or leather, that would/could ride higher on my belt.

For the price of the Falcon, it is hard to go wrong for such a heavy duty, well made, knife. If I remember correctly I paid around $50 for it, and I'm happy with what I got.:)

Not Scandi but a pure slicer nevertheless. The Spyderco Mule ( MT12P) , Cruwear version. It's an amazing steel. It's both tougher and more wear resistant than D2. It's 3V's uncle, and near to a bit higher in wear, corrosion, and a bit less tough. Add some bolt on scales from Halperin Titanium for $20-to $40.You will need to make or buy a sheath though. It can be put together for around a $100 and you will have a fixed blade that will outperform D2 , getting close to CPM M4 in performance. It will outcut or slice any of the above named knives.

Of the above named knives the second choice is the Falcon. I like 5160, and this is a tough little knife though it won't skin, slice, carve, nor have the edge stability and wear resistance of the Cruwear mule. Likewise the Elmax mule is still available for those that prefer stainless steels.

That sounds like a good option. I'd never even heard of the mule blades. I'll check them out for sure! Thanks.
