Scare Tactics: What If....?

It's a popular TV show, but the other night as I was watching it, I wondered, what if one of the "victims" pulled a knife and went after one of those monster bad guys not knowing it was a joke? I kept thinking as I watched an episode about a monster in what looked like a dark train car. I thought, geesh, I'd have my 5-inch Cold Steel Voyager out and going after that thing. (Having been victimized once by violent crime years ago, I've determined never to be defenseless again.)

Makes me wonder if it's on the level. Sometimes I get the feeling those things are staged, but then, other times, I think, man, those guys really look scared. What would happen if they pulled a stunt like that on a guy who was with the Green Beret or some other special forces who was trained to kill then ask questions?

Someone could get hurt. Surely they must take some precautions to make sure the people they play those jokes on aren't armed.

What do you think?

I've only seen a couple of short segments of that show, and I couldn't help thinking how badly that would have turned out if I had been the "victim". There would have been critically wounded or very dead actors in the parts I glimpsed. Especially as I was still in the habit of carrying my Glock 20 at that time.

I've never seen the show, but I'm familiar with the hype so I know what it is. I also have a CCW and almost always have my Glock 19 (and 3 large dogs) with me. I can easily imagine a very undesirable and regrettable outcome if the wrong person were picked as the mark.

I'm very sure their vetting process includes questions like;

Does you brother have any history of violence?
Does you brother have any criminal record?
Does you brother generally know martial arts?
Does you brother generally carry mace?
Does you brother generally carry knives?
Does you brother generally carry guns?
When we scare him within an inch of his life, how do you think he will react?

I am sure they probably exclude candidates that can and would respond effectively.
The point is to show people scared out of their wits, not show people who can respond under pressure.

I would not even bother volunteering my brother as a victim. Not because he is probably part of the .001% that carries, but because he is a cool customer.
I can not even think of something that would cause him to lose it 'scared'.

It is a fun show to watch though, and if the 'victims' are actors/actresses then they do a darned good job.
The "Satan's Baby" is an instant classic.

My girlfriend and I watched "Vacancy" together and laughed through the whole thing, remembering a bad motel we stayed in on one trip. With the amount of firepower in our room, it would have taken fifty guys to get a foothold in the room (we both shot competetively). We were both thinking if it was us in that movie, it wouldn't have lasted long enough to make a trailer, much less a feature film.

The"victims" are thoroughly pre-screened and their friends and relatives interviewed about the "victim". They ask about any martial arts/self defense training, any violent history, bad temper, gun owner/CCW carrier.

Basically you have to be a complete pacifist weenie to wind up on the show.

Do they ask about any medical conditions that could potentially cause bad things to happen, like heart conditions/ problems, panic attacks, asthma, or anything like that?

Heck I'm still waiting for someone on cheaters to pull a gun and pop somebody cause they tend to just ambush people on the street.

I have thought this very same thing quite a few times. Someone who has gone through some muggling in the past or something... determined to to suffer it again... could turn out bad. He/she doesn't even need to be armed at all... Here in Spain there is no way any of the victims would carry a gun... possible not even a nail clipper... but there is always a bunch of things arround that could work as improvised weapons. Right now I am sitting in the office and I see scissors, metal pens, screwdrivers, a crowbar, etc (not to mention a Victorinox Rescue in my pocket and a leatherman in a drawer).

I would have made a very bad patsy. I carry both a gun and a knife every day, everywhere I go. I saw a couple of episodes, and I could very easily see myself drawing and firing.

As others have stated, I'm pretty sure they vetted their patsies well enough to ensure that wouldn't happen.

The host on Cheaters got stabbed one time. No joke.

Scare tactics is hilarious. Ive watched the "ratboy" episode several times, and always laugh my ass off.

From watching the show once or twice, it sometimes appears the people are acting. I'm not sure this is the case, but I'd think the show would have to have a way of weeding out the people likely to fight back. I had a friend named "Floyd" once who was one cool investigator. Some bad guys managed to get his partner out into a back ally and he ran up two flights of stairs and out onto a ledge in the dark where he could see what was going on below. With his pistol out he just barely saved the poor guy. Anyway, I wouldn't submit his name for a prank unless I wanted someone dead.
