I read lots on here about guys and gals getting knives "scarry sharp". I sharpen my knives regularly, but often wonder what it means to YOU as to what is "scarry sharp" Gimme some examples so I can judge my sharpening skills will ya? Thanks, jeff

Scary sharp is a level of sharpness where you test the edge of the blade on something and say, "oh sh*t, that's sharp!" Sharp to the point where you get more cautious about the knife. Sharp to the point where the blade cuts you and you don't know until you start bleeding.

Scary sharp is when I pluck a hair from my head, lay it over the business side of my knife and it splits in half from it's own weight. That's scary sharp!

When I can whittle hairs and cut most everything without slicing..
That only last for so long though...

Cutting free hanging hair with not much arm movement. Hold the hair, put the knife about 1-2 inches away from the hair and kind of give your wrist a flip. Scary sharp will cut the hair in two.

Also hair whittling is fun, with a scary sharp knife you should be able to hold the knife edge up (edge toward your face,) and then drag/pull a hair along the edge and the hair will split/whittle from it's own weight.

Not slicing the hair to get it to whittle... As some do on YouTube. The knife should need no slicing motion, push cut the whittle.

Also, tree topping... I have only ever done this one time. It was on a Kreined Caly3 reprofiled with the edge pro bottomed out and no micro bevel. (Yes the ZDP micro chipped out like crazy... So a micro bevel was done with in days)

Tree topping is raking/pulling the knife above skin... Maybe a 1/8inch above the hair on your arm and the hair will pop/cut in half. Tree topping is not to be confused with hair popping.

Hair popping is the edge ON the skin and as soon as it hits a hair the hair "pops" off. Really it's like it jumps up and off the skin.

Hope that helps :D

Cutting free-hanging hair in half with a pass, no sawing or dragging the edge along hair at an angle.

I've only been able to do this with 2 knives.

Straight razors are easier to get this way.

who knows, hairs can be split with a 100 grit edge, and newsprint can be turned into confetti from a filed edge. I would stick to visual inspection under high magnification, too many stunts can be done at too wide a range of edge finishes.

I do agree somewhat..
Its sort of a happy feeling I get when it is perfect..:D

scary sharp is when someone tries to shave off a bit of his thumb nail and instead of shaving, it slides right through the nail into his thumb
