Scary Sharp Edges!

Yesterday I decided to sharpen my Izula & RC-3 knives with my Spyderco Sharpmaker. I have the ultra-fine sharpening sticks also.
Since I have sharpened alot of different knives in the past, this was a 1st for sharpening any of my Esee knives with the Sharpmaker.
They will shave hair off my arm once again & are very scary sharp now!
After sharpening, I wiped the blades with a "Marine Tuff Cloth."
I highly recomend the Spyderco Sharpmaker & the Tuff Cloth to maintain your Essee knives. Even mineral oil will help to preserve your knife edge when used alot for cutting in the kitchen or at camp in the mountains & etc.! Even fat off the meat will work if you have nothing else to help preserve your blade edge from rusting! Evem bacon grease works but the bugs like it too! :D

The UF stone is awesome on ESEE's. I freehand my izzy with the Spydy double stuff and finish with the UF sharpmaker stone. I whittled a hair after that...... Never expected that!

Olive oil works great too. Been using that for a while now. Still need to get a large bottle of Choji oil as i prefer that too olive oil.

After owning almost every benchstone on the planet,I'm still now considering getting a Sharpmaker after reading of some great results you guys get. I'm pretty good doing freehand on benchstones, but it requires a lot of concentration not to screw things up. The Spyderco seems like a good maintenance tool, but not one for heavy metal removal.

For heavy metal removal you almost need to get the diamond stones. They retail for about 40-50 bucks I think. You could use the course stones that come with the sharpmaker, but you'd be at it for quite a long time I imagine.

Even the diamond rods you can get for the sharpmaker don't have anywhere near the surface area of a course diamond benchstone. Even on one of those, I've been at it an hour or so , re-profiling certain blades.
I think for a daily maintenance,quick-use tool , the Spyderco would be a good investment. I am still considering getting it , along with the diamond rods. But when it comes to major sharpening , a benchstone will outperform rods anytime. I think the Sharpmaker is a great tool for people with limited sharpening skills.(no offence intended.) It's almost foolproof. If you set it to the right angle and follow the instructions, you will get good results.

props to the sharpmaker as well  i have the dmt diamond diafolds for field use but for normal maintenance i find that the sharpmaker along with the black & green stropping compound gets my knives shaving sharp in no time.

My Sharpmaker never gets that good of an edge on my RAT knifes, whether they're a different angle than usual I have no idea.

Sharpmaker works great on Spydercos obviously, but generally I just have to sharpen on my DMT stones if I want something decent, but I'm also looking at getting the Edge Pro.
