I don't know why everyone wants to see if they can shave the hair off of their arm when they pick up a knife. A friend of mine came by the office today, and wanted to see my Emerson. I had to take a phone call, and he was checking it out, when I sat there and watched him cut the mess out of his arm trying to shave hair. DA! I sure am glad he didn't drop it. He cleaned up the cut, while I cleaned my Emerson.

That Emerson is one SHARP knife!!!

From what I hear, single-bevel edges don't shave, so no emerson would, even if it was mind-bogglingly sharp.

I once developed a terrible rash and in desperation, used a Commander to shave the entire effected leg. Smooth as a baby's bottom. So yes, single bevels do shave.

yes, my SOCFK tanto will shave hair easily also, didnt come that way, but it will now. i think razor blades are chisel grind arent they?

all it takes is a spydie ceramic and a little time and ya can make anything shave, i think

I thought any knife that cost more that $100 with blade length no longer that 9 inches would shave happily these days...

In fact, when I go camping with friends, I won't bother to take my shaver with me... I just bring along my Spyderco Moran.

(In fact, when I go camping, I won't bother to shave, nor shower...)

Yes, I can shave hair right off my arm or leg with my Emerson, but this guy just laid it on his arm an ran it across cutting flesh. I guess he was used to trying it with his SWAT probably being satisfied if it would shave only a few hairs in one stroke.

I sharpen a LOT of knives, mainly because I sell a lot to fellow coworkers when I need money :D so I made myself a natural work flow for sharpening I guess! And they always want to see if it will shave hair when I hand it back to them, does of course...My wife just hates it when I go shaving hair...but I explain to her that
We have a constitutional right to Bare Arms!

Uhhh, razor blades are chisel ground, my gillete Mach III seems to shave just fine, as does my Schick. Who ever told you the above, well they may not be the most reliable source.

The ability to hsave hair is based mainly on edge alignment, then edge acutness and finally polish. The level of polish mainly effects the smoothness of the shave.

My Opinel folders are filed on bastard mill files, they have a very course edge, well suited for aggresive slicing. They still shave hair, albiet a bit roughly.

The average Cold Steel knife comes with a very thick, very highly polished and well aligned edge. They shave very nicely.

A single (chisel) ground knife will shave hair like a champ, it is just a matter of sharpening it properly. I sharpen a freind's CQ7 (actually a BM 970 I gave him), the edge is quite easy to attain hair pooping sharpness. A simple strop charge with rouge, edge trailing. I maintain the edge angle (about 22 degrees on the edge bevel) and strop flat on the flat ground side. The resulting edge is frightening.

I had someone do almost the same thing with a Small Blackjack fixed blade. This person wanted to look at the knife and he noticed his fingerprints on the polished blade and went to wipe them on his jeans, on the leg. Instead of wiping like on a strop with edge trailing, he wiped across his leg. One ruined pair of jeans and a shallow 21/2 in. cut on the leg, was the result. Some people just don't have a clue how to handle sharp knives.
