We have all heard the term SCARY SHARP  when someone is describing a knife. Does any of my Blade of Brothers here on Blade Forum have in their collection a knife that is just that? I would also like to know how this term originated. Many fellow members use this terminology. Could they have cut themselves with such a blade that they are scared to handle it  Looking forward to some input !
Thanks

I define scary shar as a knife able to shave hair.

My Benchmade BM 42 balisong is scary sharp LOL

I am not afraid to handle them but I have a couple of productions (Kershaw JYD SG2 and Lone Wolf Harsey T2) that are both laser beams. On the custom side I have 3 David Mosiers that are all scary sharp.

While I don't carry it any more due to a few reasons, my wife bought me one of them small Boker ceramic knives and it is "scary" sharp. I have cut myself with it and not even known until later. I have sent it back to the factory once for a laser sharpening and when it's fresh it truly cuts like a razor.

Both my new Spydercos, the Para and the Tenacious shave hair easily with almost no pressure.

They are easily the sharpest production knives I've had. Over my SOGs, Kershaws and Gerbers.

Don't own any customs.

I say a knife is not scary sharp until it seems to scare the hair right of your arm. Richard j's customs are just that. The hair seems to leap off your arm for fear of being hit with richard's edge! And they split hair easily. Shaving is no task for richard j edges :)

Scary sharp can be a lot of things to a lot of people, it also depends a lot on the sharpest object they have seen. Scary sharp to most is usually dull to my standards, but then again my knives are starting to not feel that sharp anymore :D

Ever try to cleanly slice tissue paper or toilet paper?
Scary sharp is when you can do that. Nothing else
qualifies. I can get a knife sharp enough to make hair fly,
but will tear tp.

That is what I use when sharpening. I am not finished until
the knife can cleanly slice tp.

Knifenut, if it's not too much trouble, could you post your procedure for attaining that sharpness? I know that all your pics show your knives splitting molecules so I'd like to know what the secret is.
(I have a sharpmaker on the way and that will get them sharp enough for me, I'm not trying to start a competing sharpening business lol, just curious.)

TP is something I have never seen of any steel at any sharpness, though I have only tried it a few times. I have cleanly sliced paper towel, rolled paper tubes, hair, kevlar...... but I have never seen a knife slice TP like your cutting paper. Maybe a specific kind but not the stuff I have, got a vid you would like to share?

The knife he is cutting with appears to be a Kershaw JYD II composite blade. If you have not bought one, do so, they come scary sharp out of the box.
My JYD II TI/SG2 also came that sharp, and still is. It cut tp out of the box and still does.
I don't carry it much because, with a 3.75 blade, it is too small for my tastes.

I start by making my own edge (re-beveling) and progressively sharpen it to my finest stone (8000 grit). I then spend a good amount of time with several strops coated with diamond compound (the secret). I usually start with a 3 micron strop and finish with a 1 micron strop but I also have 0.5 and 0.25 micron to take it to true stupid levels. I use diamonds from start to finish and for me it produces the sharpest edge, nothing I have used can compare to what the diamonds do.

I define scary sharp as a edge that will shave a hair or a blade that you only know you are cut when you find blood.

How long does the sharpness of a scary sharp blade hold? I don't think I've ever had anything that sharp.

this was my tp slicing last year, I need to get on the ball and improve it.
