I'm a bit paranoid, but I was wondering, if I'm going to bring my knives to be sharpened at a mall, busy with people, and put them all in a bag, sheathed, and somehow get stopped by a peace / police officer, what would happen?

Most of my knives are already illegal due to the blade length.

And if it was in a bag, would that be considered "concealed"?

Are trips like that exempt in law?

gotta learn to sharpen them at home

im guessing it depends how the cop is when you tell him the story but i think that if its illegal to have a dagger and you have one in a bag yea it could be a concealed weapon but im not very law savy

Sharpening is a skill we all need to have. Sounds like time to start learning.

If nothing else, most "real" hardware stores offer tool sharpening services. Don't go to the mall.

I do not feel it would be illegal. For one, the 2.5" blade length restriction in the Anaheim city code (6.32.010) only applies when you are loitering, engaging in disorderly conduct, or in a place that sells alcohol. The county and state have no blade length restriction.

Furthermore, carrying in a case, especially if it locks, latches or is otherwise hard to open suddenly, is usually is not considered carrying concealed. And taking to a place of repair is considered a good faith action that even firearms are generally exempted from in nearly all states.

in general, knife concealment also requires the element of "available for ready use" in california.

imo, a bunch of sheathed knives in a bag are not readily available. but it may also depend on the type of bag. eg, anything in a woman's purse could easily be considered readily available. items in a fully slung backpack may not be.

however, it would be a good idea to keep the receipt and perhaps a business card in order to establish your previous business.

if you are stopped, and the knives are found, expect to be detained. based only on the information provided, i don't see an arrestable violation unless your knives are autos and beyond the 2" blade length limit for personal or automobile carry.

but every stop is situational, so i can't say with certainty no violation would have occurred incidental to the possession of the knives.
