I've seen several of these online, but never handled one. I particularly like the fact that they are offered in ATS34. Are these quality knives? How do they compare to other similarly priced brands, like GEC?

They tend to have the same, if not better, quality as the other S&M knives, but with the addition of some real quality ATS-34 steel, compared to the 420HC they use in the regular "keystone" offerings. The F&W line also seems to have more unique patterns and handle materials.

Here are a couple of mine:

First a daddy barlow. The toothpick shares the stage with a GEC Tidioute 2nd cut stag.

I've got one, an English Jack.

The quality is excellent. I don't have a GEC to compare the File &Wire to, but it's on par with other knives of the same price range from AG Russell, Boker, Canal Street, and Maserin.

I love the File & Wire series. I had one of the English Jacks with the loooong spear secondary blade. The ATS-34 was a really nice touch. Loved that knife, until it walked off. :'(

I love them and with ATS-34 they are nice and different. Here are mine....

I like the bone on that big barlow! Nice clean lines on that knife. What does File & Wire mean anyway?

File & Wire, if I remember correctly, refers to two (antiquated) methods of testing a finished blade's hardness: cutting a piece of wire, and making a stroke or two on the blade steel with a file.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm having a hard time finding the older F&W series. The newest are too large. If you know of good etailers that may have them, please let me know.

And others failed to mention that most of the F&W knives are larger in size. Real handfuls. They are among my personal favorites.

I have the Cotton Sampler at 4 1/4", a classic working 'jack knife'.
An awesome work knife

It is quite wide but very thin, so it actually easy to pocket carry

I also have a Cotton Sampler, a real handful but carries pretty good...I also have the Wildcat Driller pattern- a great knife cuts well fine fit and finish, heavy enough to warrant finding a sheath for it
