Since I live in PA, I'm trying to expand my PA knives outside of just Case and GEC. The ebony 2-blade Schatt & Morgan Heritage Jack has caught my eye. Does anyone have one? Any opinions?

Being a "Schatt" guy I have both sets of the Heritage Series. :D I'm not sure which knife you are referring to Blaine but personally I think the 1st set had better quality control. If it's from the 2nd series I would like to see it in hand first (which is not always possible) or from a dealer you can trust. My experience was the 2nd series had some lazy blades.
But I did like ALL the patterns and choice of covers, blade steel and bolster material!

Dave,

It's this guy from 2011. Stock pic from the internet:

I have the single spear blade in ebony. Its the 2011 series like the one above. Fit and finish is good on mine. The ebony is dark and uniformly grained. The metal finish is good though some light machine marks can be seen in the blade when looking closely and at the right angle. Nothing that is very noticeable. Patina will hide it fine. The pull is light, maybe 3-4. I have to admit I've been spoiled by GEC's monster bear trap pulls. The blade is solid when open, no play and centered when closed.

And of course pics.

Check for blade play. Seems to be fairly common on S&Ms. Of the 5 I have 3 had play and two went back for service. Got one back and waiting for the other. I love S&M patterns but they need to get that blade play thing down. Heavier springs would be a plus too. Like mentioned earlier, they are light in general.

Blaine, I have one of those with bone scales, and it is a great knife. Except for the spring on the main blade, it's loose, and in the half stop open position, the spring is very deep inside the scales. I would want to get the knives in hand before I bought them. I have a premium stockman from the second series, and it definitely was not the high end that Schatt and Morgan promised. I have a single blade jack from the first Heritage series, and it is a great knife, although the spring has started to fall under below the liners. Not as bad as the two blade jack though.

Blaine, that exact knife has not stopped beckoning to me.

However, reports from others here, and especially seeing one in person, has kept me from getting one.

"Walk and Talk" were more like "stumble and slur," and there were noticeable gaps in the backsprings.

I admit, it tempts me still, but I'd likely regret its issues even at a lower cost.

It sounds like some turned out better than others, but I'm not sure to what degree.

But just look at it-- isn't it beautiful?

Mine is one of the spearpoint models from the first series. I hesitated too based on mixed reviews from earlier buyers, but I went ahead and pushed the button anyway. Glad I did too. No blade play, very smooth action, average spring.

If there was one flaw to point out, it seems perhaps the scales shrank, leaving an 'edge' where the scales meet liners.

I have been in the same boat, and I agree. I've been interested, but just haven't been able to pull the trigger.

I have experience with the 2011 single blades in Ebony (Clip) Rosewood (Spear) Pros. good quality wood, pins&shields inlet well, nice appearance, not too heavy in the pocket either. Neutral. Slight gaps&minimal play but nothing to be despairing over! Cons, thick blades and not very good grinds, needs work to get it sharp, The Spear has lowered spring in open. You don't actually get a very long blade relative to the handle, but some may not mind this aspect. OVERALL very pleasant and different knives.

I think the 2 bladed versions are likely the same.

2012 Bone 3 blade Woodsman. Again a handsome knife but a lot heavier - if that's a concern. No blade play but the snap is minimal, even needs guiding in on the Pen blade-veering towards friction folder territory......

I think if you can examine a Heritage knife in person, you'll likely be smitten with it.

i doesn't deserves love i have for this knife,but... love is blind :)

I have the 1st series 2-blade Jack in stagbone
It is very good indeed
The F&F is worthy of S&M

I have the 2nd series stockman in ebony
The wood is rich and black
Unfortunately the F&F is not up to the S&M quality, but is okay for the price point
Lovely to look and use, it is a superb user and holds a wicked edge

I have an ebony single blade spear from the first series and the premium stockman from the second. I love the stockman, the single blade spear...still haven't been able to get it sharp :(

Brian,
That single spear blade in ebony is a super looking knife. I missed getting one of these when they came out and wish I'd have tracked one down.

When the first series came out, I bought four of them. The big single blade jacks in ebony and rosewood and the 2 blade jacks in ebony and bone. At first I was a bit ambivalent about them, but that big rosewood jack is becoming a "frequent flyer". I'm holding the ebony spear for now. I gave the two blade ebony jack away two Christmas eves ago and the bone model is so pretty, I haven't been able to bring myself to mess it up with pocket carry and use.
