hello I have been in the traditional forum more and more. I have always been into traditional knives and have a mess of case/queen/others. I have just come accross Schatt & Morgan. I am interested in them but dont know anything about them. As many of you know from my last post here I have been looking into a Mountain Man by Queen but have realized that Schatt & Morgan make one too. I hate vs. Threads but here goes. Is there any real diff between the two? I see Queen uses 1095 and D2 in some of thiers while S&M;) uses 420J and in some ATS-34. And comments on this would be appreciated. I dont mean this to be a vs. thread I would just like to know more about S&M and there fit and finish etc.

Schatt & Morgan knives are made by Queen. Schatt & Morgan was the name of the company that many years ago, some employees left and started Queen. Later Queen bought out Schatt & Morgan and makes both Queen and S&M in the same original factory that S&M used today.

Usually a knife that Queen makes under the Schatt & Morgan name will be fancier and have more detail than a Queen knife of the same pattern, i.e. exotic handle materials and stuff like more engraving.

Schatt & Morgan knives will be seen using stainless more there days, typically 420HC or ATS34, their #3L Mountain Man in ATS34 is a REAL nice knife!

If your more into using than collecting, the Queen Mountain Man's in D2 or 1095 are both great. both have their pros and cons, D2 won't rust that easy, but can be harder to sharpen than 1095.

L.C. pretty much covered it : Although S&M are made by Queen, they seem to be more "limited" run" and "numbered series" knives...maybe with a special vintage bone handle for example. The steel used on S&M's tend to be pretty much stainless...420HC and ATS-34 ( on occasion ).

Here's a S&M Deluxe English Jack in ATS-34 I picked up new last year for about $80....and to tell you the truth, if I had paid $150 for it I would not have considerate myself ill used, She's tall, solid, and handsome as all get out with nice detail to fit and finish :

Nice to see you spending time over here.....post some photos of your traditional knives if you feel like it....we all like lookin' .

Thanks guys for everything, I thought they were related companies but I wasnt sure. My camera is on the fritz but I would like to display some of my knives, I think I will ordre both a Queen and a S&M mountain man and do a comparison....heck I really like the design and owning 2 wouldnt hurt.

Great pic, Gramps! :)

Yup... S&M's File & Wire English Jack is an amazing knife. I took mine out and played with it a bit a couple of days ago. It had been a few months since I last used it and I sort of forgot what a fantastic knife it is. It's definitely a good value for the price.

I'll chime in on this. The English Jack is so nice that I bought a second to use as EDC. A wonderful knife with fantastic fit and finish. Buy one. You won't regret it.

i have a small texas toothpick-supposed to be one of 100 but says 1000(bought from a dealer that people here think very highly of,he confirmed with s&m that the blade was a mislable),also has very poor fit and finish-

cant see how a company that produces limited runs would let this piece out-
i wont be buying anymore s&m

I hate to hear that, if it comes from a reputable well know dealer send it back and request another knife or your money back. It's a shame when somebody pays good money for something and then finds very poor craftsmanship or flaws. If the dealer will not take it back Queen Cutlery is pretty good about making exchanges and or repairs.

I have several Schatt & Morgans and have always been very pleased with the quality but mistakes happen sometimes so send it back if you are not pleased...

Take care and good luck,

dealer offered to take it back if i did some kind of no sale ebay garbage so he didnt have to pay them for the sale-then i droped it and scratched it a little so ill eat it

Sometimes a company will let a bad one slip through. I just got a limited production run Strider slip-joint. Black-lip pearl, raindrop damascus, engraved bolsters. Mick Strider did not make many of these. Fit and finish is very poor but it sure is a tough, solid, hard core little puppy.

(;) ;) ;) , and a few more in case anyone believes this, ;) ;) ;) )
