Just got this one in the mail. Unfortunately, this knife does have some issues and is headed back to Schatt & Morgan but I thought I'd share some photos and observations. I'd also appreciate your opinions on the problems. Here are a few photos of the knife.

I looked up the pattern name in Levine's Guide 4th Edition and a "dog-leg" whittler is a heavier serpentine whittler usually with a clip master blade. A "Wharncliffe whittler" is serpentine whittler with a Wharncliffe main blade. I suppose both pattern names might apply to this knife since it is a heavy serpentine and it has a Wharncliffe main blade.

Here's a photo of the knife next to a Wharncliffe whittler from Schatt & Morgan. At 4 inches long, the Dogleg is much more of a working knife than the smaller (but still very functional) Wharncliffe whittler, which is more of a gentleman's knife in my opinion... actually, this one is a gift for a special little lady when she's ready for her first knife. I bought the Dogleg whittler so that I would have a matching knife.

Despite its large size, the knife is reasonably thin and the edges of the bolsters and handle are nicely rounded. I was worried that the main blade might just be a thick crowbar but I was pleasantly surprised by the grind which tapers to a reasonably thin point. The grind is much more important to me than the factory edge but I will mention that the edges were dull and would still require sharpening if the knife weren't being returned. The knife has a split backspring and I was very pleased with its mechanics. Good walk and talk on all the blades. The following photo shows the profile of the knife and also shows one of the problems. Note that one side of the knife is red whereas the other side is brown.

I suppose that is not the end of the world but the color difference is not the reason for the return. The main blade is slightly off center also but that is also not the reason for the return. Unfortunately it also has a pin crack on the mark side at the center pin and I don't think that is acceptable on a new knife.

I wouldn't be surprised to have these problems with a $8 Rough Rider but don't think they are acceptable on a knife 10x the price. What's your opinion?? I called Schatt & Morgan and explained the problems and the owner told me that the knives are mint but he did agree to accept a return and exchange or refund.

Jake...
Your right most of it can be over looked..but the crack...............beautiful handle material though

Yeah a crack on a brand new knife in that price range even though bone is a batural material; can't say I blame you. Other then that I would be fine with it, beautiful whittler!

That's sure disappointing to find a crack. Since you're sending it back, maybe you could find one of those great lockback whittler S&M made. Still that's a great looking knife.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'm going to send it in tomorrow. Hopefully what I get back will be restore my original excitement about the knife.

I've been looking at those myself but found a good deal on a Case Seahorse in the meantime which I went for instead. I still have that model and a Northwoods version (which I believe is also made by Queen/S&M, finished by Northwoods) on my "wish" list. Wharncliffe whittlers seem to be my favorite pattern, I have a few of them now from GEC and Case.

It's a sweet knife, I hope they get it replaced for you asap.

I agree with you. Like you said, it's one thing on a $8 Rough Rider, but the price range of S&M, it is not acceptable.
