today i recieved my first real disapointment in the mail-
a schatt & morgan tiny texas toothpick-
what a piece of garbage-
blade is way off center, the middle rivet has a round over looking slag on bolthsides(i bet chinese pieces dont even have that)- scratch's on the nickle bolsters(just noticed)was supposed to be 1 of 100 according to the ebay add,its 1 of 1,000-that alone takes the price down in my eyes from a 80$ piece to a $30-40 tops-

they had another one that was 1 of 300 hundred but i wanted a rarer one so i bought this and the 1of 300 was cheaper-

i was expectin a real nice piece from what others have said about s&m-
and man did i want a tiny texas toothpick in the baddest way-
ive sent a email to cumberland to find out if i can send it back-i hope i can ,i cant keep this pos -

guess i will be sticking with canal street from here on out for my slip joint collectables-
wont even look at a schatt and morgan again:thumbdn:

You never know with Ebay, and even with any supplier you don't really know what happened to the knife after it was manufactured. That said, I have no experience with S&M, so I can't comment on the consistency of quality.

rosconey2, it's just one knife

I have lots of S&M's and the fit and finish on them all is superb

it sounds defective, not send it back to the seller saying what you said in your post? if the seller doesn't take it back, I'm sure S&M will make good on it

they didn't get a great rep by turning out garbage...

s&m cant make a 1 of 1000 knife a 1 of 100 knife can they?lol

i might have looked past the non centered blade, cant look past the numbers made or the slag crap on the middle pin-bolth are unacceptable to me-

i hope cumberland is a aok company because i really dont want this in this condition-

its the first knife ive bought that i thought was poorly bulit for the money-

just recieved a email from cumberland-
s&m told him its a missprint its a 1 of a 100 piece-
still im soured on s&m with the quality of it-s&m said send it back for repair
-lol

he wants help getting his selling fees back from ebay-first time ive ever heard of this-of coarse this is my first ebay purchase that i recieved that wasnt good-got burned 5-6 years ago with a no delivery ,thats my bad mark, guy left negative feedback because i asked for a refund 6 weeks after it was sent to me 3 times and never made it or so he said-

man i hate this crap-i wish i would have just bought the cheapest case tiny toothpick,if it wasnt perfect i wouldnt have cared for 30 bucks-

In my experience with them they are an aok company; one of the best I've dealt with.

Not fair to judge an entire company's output by one bad piece. Every company has some units that are lemons. Get it fixed or replaced. It might grow on you. I collect S&M file and wire models and I've only seen one that I thought was poor enough to complain about. The others have been excellent.

Strangely, I think it is Chinese production that is driving down the quality of U.S. and European knives. They just can't compete economically and they speed up production to get costs as low as they can. I think it is a mistake. I think the U.S. and Euro companies should simply make the best products in the world and then price them where they need to be.

imho a 1 of a 100 knife should be a dam fine piece, they make the limited runs for collectors, collectors are picky people-

to have a mislabled blade also says something about s&m,did they leave the mislabled blades in the limited production pieces because they are cheap or just didnt give a fudge?they had knowledge why not do something?

if they were a new company and this was the first run i might look past such issue's

Which "cumberland"? There is more than one. One is at the very top of customer service. The other . . . .

I think this may be the case pretty often. US manufacturers (and many EU based ones) would probably do well to avoid competing with "cheap", and aim for quality and prestige.

Perhaps this is one of Camillus' problems, relying on the low end for too many profits, where the competition is fiercest. Not that it can't be done. Victorinox, for example, makes an excellent product often for an extremely competitive price. They compete on prestige, quality and price very well. Chinese companies generally compete only on price. And sadly, too many old school American companies compete mostly on prestige, too willing to sacrifice quality, and incapable of competing on price.
