Schmidt Sting Pain Index

Lol...you know how they rate the hotness of peppers and such? A few decades back, a fellow devised a system where he would touch another fellow's tongue with the hot pepper/sauce/whatever, and count how many squirts of honey it took to make the burning stop. Poor buggers. But stinging info is good stuff.

Those descriptions are great.

Bold and unrelenting. Somebody is using a drill to excavate your ingrown toenail.

I'll have to remember to stay away from areas with bullet ants...

Pure, intense, brilliant pain. Like walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch nail in your heel.

Oh crap, I have a trip to Costa Rica planned for this winter!

I had a wasp crawl up my pants two weeks ago while painting my deck. It wasn't THAT bad. Then again I was rather distracted by the knowledge that a wasp was working its way up my pants...

So did he purposely sting himself with every stinging insect he could find to make that scale? Thats dedication.

The one that got me last weekend stung me through my sock, just above the top of my boot. Either he got mad because I got too close to his nest or he just happened to land there and got tangled in the fuzz on my sock. It burned like crazy for a few minutes and then settled down to a fairly low level pain for the rest of the hike. I'm guessing about a 2 or so on the scale.

The only other times that I've ever been stung were when I stepped on a bee with bare feet (I seemed to do that about once a summer or so as a kid) and the one time when I jumped on a log that happened to have a hornet's nest inside of it (that was NOT fun) so it was a real surprise when this guy came along all by himself and stung me.
