Okay guys, I posted a while back about me receiving my BK2 (still love it!) and now I would like to learn about sharpening. I'm going to start off using an old Buck 110 and I have a Smiths 6 inch medium Arkansas stone that is 600 grit. Basically, what other types of stones and different grits would I need to take a knife through the whole process to make it shaving sharp? I can put a DECENT edge on a knife with this stone as is. I would like to get to some type of stone because free handing is fun and I think it's a cool skill to learn!

Sorry for the novel just wanted to make everything clear! Thanks guys!

Here is a post I recently made, to a similar question.

Sharpening a knife, is kinda like making love. You're first time, it will work out OK, but the more you do it, the better the results.:D

Here is a tutorial I did, a while back using a guide system, the only difference, is that my stones are held to the same angle, by steel. Yours will be held by your hand.

And just like sex, get as much practice as you can. And don't worry, you won't break anything. :D

Oh, and good book is Sharpening Made Easy by Steve Bottorff.

Here is a link to his webpage, and there is a PDF of the book you can download, for free. Best damn book on sharpening ever made. That's my opinion, btw, but you'll see what I mean.

Wow that system is very impressive! But I dont think I can spend that much at the moment. But when I can save up the cash that will be first on my list! I have a few questions for you if you don't mind though. Since I have a 600 grit stone and that fairly coarse correct? Should I get stone that has a higher grit or lower? Will anyone of those helps sharpness if I use one stone then the other?

For sharpening 1095-cryovan steel, get a king 800/4K combo waterstone for less than $35. it's a great starter waterstone. Strop on paper newspaper for a smoother shave edge.

I have a Dans Arkansas stone that is supposed to be about 1000-1200 grit and I can get a shaving edge off of it very easily. Really I would recommend the Spyderco bench stones as they are pretty inexpensive but put great edges on blades and you don't need water or oil. Good luck and happy sharpening.

Thanks for the replies! The whole morning I was playing around with my 600 grit Arkansas stone on an old buck 110 that was in bad shape, it took away the really dented edge and then I fine tuned it with the white fine rod from the lansky crick stick an ill be darned if it isn't an awesome working edge. Even sharpened the BK 2 noticeably with that combo.
