Regarding the older USA models, is this knife easy to open? Would a thumb stud work on this knife?

Mine takes a firm grip with two fingers but the action is smooth and even. A thumb stud would probably work fine if positioned just right.

The problem (?) I see is that these are becoming quite valuable as collectors items and I'd be hesitant to 'mod' on an unused example.

I'd most likely try it with a used knife. The NIB ones are too expensive.

I second what Bob said about the Mustang. It's a great knife. The big ol' 1095 blade sharpens up to a razor very easily.

I say do what you want with what you've got. Collect if you want to, add thumbstuds if you want to. You only live once.
