Growing up in a state where deer hunting is big business, I remember the knives I used to see in my youth. Dad had a near death experience that made him decide to stay out of the woods during deer season before I was old enough to hunt, but I remember the other hunters out there and the knives they carried. I remember the Buck 119's, the Ka-Bars, the Marbles, but the one I was the most beautiful back then was the Schrade 153UH Golden Spike. I never got to use one for it's intended purpose and I know there were the detractors who favored the Specials or Sharpfingers, but I also knew some old timers who loved those Golden Spikes and used them.

I know the pattern is still being produced today albeit not where it used to be. I'm curious if any of you have experience with the the old and or new Spike and what your opinions are. As always pictures are welcome.

A couple of years ago one of the mags (either Blade or Knives) did a cutting comparison between the sharp finger USA and the new Chinese issue, I believe they said the knives were pretty much the same.

Regards

Robin

I have not used that pattern, but I know this: It was introduced in 1973 and the first VERY few had Schrade Walden tang stamps. They had non-stainless blades. They almost immediately lost the "Walden" stamp, but otherwise continued much the same. At some point soon thereafter they went to SCHRADE+ stainless steel, and at the same time the blade stock became thinner. The pattern was continued all the way to the factory closure in 2004.

I haven't used this DU SFO of a Schrade 153 either; bought it because I'm a longtime DU member and I liked the blued blade. OH

I always thought the Golden Spike was a very classic hunting knife deign. Almost like a working man's Randall model 3. Very American in it's roots.:thumbup:
