Schrade 155 Jigged Bone Scale Repair

Greetings,

I recently found a Schrade Cut. Co. model 155 knife with original jigged bone scales that have an few chips or missing sections along the edge of handle.

These older Schrade scales are beautiful to my taste and I would rather attempt to save the existing original knife rather than replace the scales with new material.

I have thought it possible to attempt to fit a small section of similar bone into a missing gap near the button and them epoxy it in place. I also have thought of attempting to blend a color matching epoxy to fill edge chips to the handle which I could then shape and texture to better blend in.

I have never disassembled one of these old knives, so have no experience in what is the least damaging means of removing scales, or bolsters etc. I am experienced with much machine and detail work and would most probably be capable of making disassembly and repair myself but sure could use some suggestions from the forum members and, possibly find an old broken Schrade Jigged scale to use for repair.

Thanks,
Kenny

Hi Dave & the gang,
Checked out the Maint/tinkering/embellishment forum but found no useful info on folding knife restoration, disassembly, scale repairs etc. Would follow up on any links anyone may offer that might give me some useful info on restoration of an old Schrade Auto knife.

Kenny,
If you didn't find anything there, you might try a couple other pocketknife forums I've seen repair stuff on. I don't recall all the rules about links/references to other forums, but I would google AAPK and start there. I'm pretty sure I've seen a member named Muskrat Man show how to do a repair exactly like you're asking about over there.

I have had work done by muskratman and another fellow. If you want, here are their email address: muskratmanknives@cinci.rr.com and the other is: knifeDoctor@aol.com
They always are willing to help as well do the work for a fee.

Well, in the mail today, I got back the two knives I sent to Muskrat Man for some minor customization. If his repair work is anything like his custom work, and I'm certain it is, I guarantee you it would look great if you sent it to him. He does beautiful work, which I will have to post pics of when I get home tonight.
