Hi Everyone:

I'm new to this forum, and new to Schrade knives. I've been looking into collecting some of the "new old stock" knives from the closed factory, since theres still a lot of it around, and at reasonable prices.

In any case, I've been seeing some of these 156OT Old Timer "Little Finger" knives around, and the sellers seem to be hinting that these were made prior to discontinuence of this model in 1985. Since no one I've seen comes right out and says it, it's got to be either duplicity or uncertainty as the case may be.

Does anyone know if production was restarted on these any time after 1985? All of the ones I've seen are in high carbon steel, and I've read that Schrade was cutting back on that near the end due to cost constraints, although mainly on the folders (see, I read the FAQ on this forum once and now I sound like an expert :jerkit: ). That may suggest that these are in fact pre 1985 stock that was sitting around the factory at the end.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a great forum!

Regards,

Jim

There was to be an anniversary 156OT with a special blade etching. IMO, most of the 156es on eBay are probably the upcoming anniversary knives that hadn't yet received the etching. Or they could be old stock from pre-1985. Regardless, I doubt the eBay sellers know either.

One of the experts will probably chime in any minute with a surefire method of distinguishing the pre-1985 knives from the new production.

Either way, they are nice knives and you shouldn't let an age conflict prevent you from buying one.

Best Wishes,
Bob

It should be noted that most of these 156OT knives are being sold with a riveted replacement sheath, or one in the PH2 style. I think the proper sheath for the 156OT is the SAS17.

I have a 1520T and a sc-502 NIB with sheath that I would like to sell. This is the sharpfinger

Pardue10,
Welcome to the Schrade Forum.
I see you are new and probably not familiar with all the etiquette of the forum.
You can only trade & sell in the Exchange, and to sell you must be a paid member.
Hang around and you will learn all sorts of neat stuff about Schrade. You won't want to sell it, you will want to collect MORE & MORE. :D :D

Welcome,
Dale

Here is the sheath bfc member 'normark' made for my 156. Sorta a tactical look, constructed of kydex. Of course it is quickly adjustable for horizonal on the belt carry.

Very interesting, thanks! You're right, all the ones I see for sale right now have the brown riveted sheath.

Welcome Jim,

lt632ret, textoothpk, lrv, Codger, and others here know their Schrades!!

Codger especially knows his FIXED (sigh) blades. You can take it to the casino...er, I mean bank, with these guys.

Don't be a stranger.

The prices on the knives aren't bad, and the sheaths can be found. I wouldn't nix a good deal over the sheath. Particularly if I was buying the knife for a user. I bought two of the sheaths in the picture today pretty cheap (they also came originaly in medium russett and dark chocolate brown). Since the knives were only in production from '79-'85 (not counting any second runs made for the 100th issues), they are not really that common anymore, even if the market is currently flush with them.

I carried one EDC for a while and it was an excellent knife for outdoor chores. The little "leaf" blade attached to a substantial handle with heft to it does more work than one would imagine.

Edited for Correction: I looked over my own collection of knives and photo archives, and it seems that the sheaths these 156OT came with most often was not the SAS17, but a variant quite similar. Note the bottom of the original Little Finger sheath was more pointed than the SAS17 and lacks the rivet at the end of the stitching on the fold line.. I do not have a model number for this one yet.

Codger,
How secure is the the 156 in that sheath?
I've lost two good fixed blades while in the woods, and I question any sheath that doesn't have a good, tight retaining strap.
I know that most hunting knives are lost by being forgotten after hog-dressing the deer, but that isn't how I lost them. One,without a retainer, came out of the sheath while running and the other, with a retainer, came out while taking a 3 AM nap on a sandbar while night-fishing for trout.
Yes,I'm more prone to take naps now, when the action slows! I'm also less prone to running,so maybe the extra naps wont be a problem.

I consider mine to be very secure. The fit is tight enough, and deep enough that I have never had a worry about it coming out unintentionally. The same is true when using the SAS17 for a Sharpfinger. Of course, this is only my opinion.

Ah one of my favorite accidents waiting to happen this knife is very secure in this sheath in fact it is one of my favorite users. I have several Schrade knives myself and have even been called a collector of them. However of all the schrades in the world baby ( in my best Humphrey Bogart ). This is the most dangerous. If you happen to not take your time putting it back in the sheath and your knife is razor sharp it often will come through the wall of the sheath and if you are prone to jamming your knife back into the sheath on your hip, or in your hand often you can become one with it ( er so to speak ). Putting this knife home should be done carefully. Also after you finish bleeding you need a new sheath and since this is one of or perhapes the only ( I do not remember off hand ) model that used this style of high riser every time you look as the cut sheath it reminds you of the incident and further pisses you off. Still what a great skinner. Most of these knives get lost because the sheath is conducive to not wearing on your belt but rather putting in your pocket. Then is either left on a stump or falls out a pocket. LT

Just a thought....If you pay more for your sheath than you did for your knife you tend not to lose either. I am at your service. Down with lost knives!!!!

Were you looking for some blanks and what were they??? I cannot find the message I thought you sent. Please email or just advise that I have made a mistake ( which is quite likely ). My responsibility to my word and responding to any inquirys is more important to me than any money involved. I am just trying to respond correctly. LT

LT, I got hold of a 162 LTD blank and had it finished up all custom like and it turned out so good I thought I'd like to try a 154 and 156. It's no big deal, just one of those in the back of my mind deals to do some day. Thanks.

AH HA thankyou now I can look and see I completly forgot what you needed and it was driving me crazier than normal. Thankyou LT
