Okay. I just got a Schrade 165. LOVE the stoopit thing. Perfect shape.
BUT.... I can't get a good EDGE on it.
WHY?
I have only one other knife that I can't put a shaving edge on and it is a very thin Buck 107.
Is the Schrade just .....too.... thick in cross section? I'm pretty sure it is just 1095. And....I.....can't.....get.....it.....sharp.
I can get it ... s h a r p....... but not SHARP!
It will cut paper slices, but only if I get ....juusssssttt... the right angle to start it. I got others in 420 to 154CM that will slit paper into hairlike slivers.
But not this Schrade.

I have used diamond freehand, Sharpmaker, EZE lap round, and even stropped after each or combination.

HALP!!!!!

too.... thick in cross section?

Here's a hint for you -- if it's more than a hair's thickness from the edge it has no effect on shaving; the hair is already cut all the way through before the rest of the blade gets there. So you only have to worry about the cross section within a hair of the edge. :)

You can push cut paper even after coarse finishes when properly applied so you should never look towards simply going finer to correct problems with the initial grits.

If the edge is too obtuse it could be giving you a problem because it might be that the majority of your passes on the hones are hitting the shoulder and not the edge itself so either increase the honing angle or cut off the shoulder directly.

Blunt the edge by drawing it lightly along a stone and then reform the burr on one side and note the behavior. Then cut the edge off again and do the same and then elevate the angle slightly and finish. This should work on most steels unless they are prone to heavy burr formation which 1095 doesn't tend to be.

I'll try that. I suspected that that might be the case as it could be like a convex edge. It's that thick.
I'll try the 40 degree angle on the SM.
If that doesn't work, I'll try paper on soft backing.

It seems VERY hard. So far, I haven't detected a burr at any time.

BINGO!

I was doing 30's, finishing with 40's. OK....but no kewpie.
Then I thought OK I'll take half the side of the blade off with an hour on the 30 and THEN it will be fine.

Phbllttttt....

BUT..... START with 40
Then turn the whole SM over and make it a flat stone and REALLY lift that blade angle.

.........pip............ sharp.

Thanks Cliff.

Lavan, I love your posts, buddy. :D

Okay, puukkoman, but be prepared to answer to authorities when they finally catch me. Aiding and abetting madmen can be hazardous in these times.
