Does anyone happen to know what the handle tang on the older 1973-1991 Schrade 165OT looks like? It looks like full tang but someone said that they aren't? Not sure how that's possible.

Let's try this in one of the more specialized forums.
We can start in Traditional.

I have the same old model but I read someone's comment that said they removed the handles and found that it is a stick tang that is welded on and not a true full tang? That's where I'm confused. It looks to me like a full tang. Or maybe this is the new chinese crap 160/165OT knives they are producing?

I don't know the answer. Seems solid to me as well, but I've not taken one apart.

I have one and just assumed a full tang. Somebody do an x-ray or whatever and let us know for sure.

How can there be any doubt when the tang is visible all along the outside of the Delrin handle? The Schrade Walden and Schrade USA 165 Woodsman were all full tang. I have one.

I’ve disassembled knives (not Schrades) that I thought were full tang but turned out to be hollow. The visible tang was just a rim, the inside was machined out.

Or maybe stamped that way to begin with. Every six knives or so you've saved enough stock to make another blade.

I mean it lightens the knife and shifts the balance forward for fatigue-free dicing!
The ladies at church were throwing this out. They were right.

We’ve already got confirmation from church ladies, they seemed pretty resolute.

That's what I assumed as well with visible stock down the handle. I'm just hoping they aren't skeletonized. I don't like skeletonized tang knives (in reference to the BK9 and Kabar's train of thought there).

When they closed years ago, we saw a lot of unused blade blanks sold, I never saw one with any type of real skeletonization or a handle frame type construction. The Chinese are mainly using that frame construction now as a way to put a complex handle on a cheap knife, it eliminates a lot of guard fit up, etc.... I haven't seen them use it on the old model lines, but I wouldn't be surprised if they used it on some of the fancy lmt editions when Taylor was in charge.

They were all full tang. They blanked all the blades in a press so it would have been more work for them to add a fake tang outline to the blade. I don't have any 165 blades here but I do have a 160 OT sample blade here. This was used as a sample in the tang notch gauge. The 160 and 165 basically had identical handles.

I'm all in on Schrade Walden and Schrade USA 165s having full tangs. I can't recall they (Schrade USA and before) ever making any fixed blades with skeletonized tangs. And any attempt to hollow out the tang for the purpose of making a forward balanced knife wouldn't then have added the heavy Delrin handle on top. Makes zero sense.

Where's Codger_64? He'll bust this myth right out of the water. ;)

Thank you for this example. This is what I thought so not sure what another commenter was saying when they took the delrin handles off and found a stick tang welded on to a false tang. Mine is the older Scrade 165OT 1973-1991 (I assume).

I think it's what others have said, probably the Chinese productuon.
