HI - I've come across a 171UH Hunter knife - it's unused in it's original box, and probably dates to the 1980's (has the loss replacement policy card and the signature collection foldout). I've never seen one like this though - whereas the standard hunter has the Schrade and Super-Sharp up on the spine, on this on it's high on the bevel. The word "Jeep" in the distinct Jeep font is on the spine. It's evidently done at the factory. Any ideas when this is from, what it was for, and a fair market value? Any help or leads would be appreciated

Schrade made a lot of knives done as a SFO, or Special Factory Order. Some were done for different companies, others were done to commemorate special events. Yours sounds like one done for JEEP, and were sometimes done for company awards.

Since that PRO Hunter is a big knife, which are pretty popular to both use and collect, that one could command a good price in unused condition. If you could post a picture, or describe the box it came in, that would help. Does the stamp on the blade read SCHRADE, or SCHRADE+? Second line probably reads U.S.A. 171UH, correct? If it were to be a SCHRADE WALDEN stamp, that would be a good thing. Also, does it have a serial number on the pommel?

Value is subjective, but $125.00 to $150.00 would be my estimate. There were two editions, one from 1973 to 1983 and another around 1990. The older ones would have come in a brown box with gold lettering. Not sure about the newer one.

darn, i managed to snag a 171 at a low price and have finally got it sharp, will shave, and would like to complement it with the Old Timer equiv. oh well. it sure does feel good in the hand and nice heavy knife and will be a good worker.

The largest knives in the OT range would have to be the 15OT or the 165OT. The blade shapes are not similar to the 171UH in any way. I have never seen the 171UH with A JEEP etch Frank, any pictures?

wasn't thinking there was a 171UH with a Jeep logo. i just was looking at my very small collection and noticed there are very close variants in UH and OT patterns. will take some photos to show but you guys probably are way ahead of me there.

Don't forget the first variant which had the birdshead pommel. So there were two variants of the first issue and one of the second issue.

wow - that was fast! thanks for the info - it's a SCHRADE, not a SCHRADE+ stamp, and you're right about the lower line. The pommel serial number is between 76000 and 76100 and the factory oil is still on the blade. For some reason the Insert Image icon isn't working for me......

Frank, just so ya know...

It's against BladeForums policy to discuss active auctions. I saw this one too. It would have been a "SFO", Special Factory Order ie. Jeep ordered x number of these with the custom blade-etch.

Here is a sample of a very early one. Check the serial number. I have a bird's head model with serial #3XXX, so apparently when they switched styles they started the serialization from scratch again. (?)
