My best friend growing up and I both got our first knives of any consequence when we were 12 Mine was a Vic Huntsman, which I still have. His was a Schrade 194 Old Timer. In high school, my friend snapped about a third of the blade off of his Schrade, and that was that.
Back in January, I thought it would be fun to get a Schrade 194 for nostalgia's sake, and I posted a question about where to get one of the original USA ones. A forumite, ToddA, generously offered me one of his own and refused any offers of money or trades in compensation; a classy gesture that is not unusual here.
Well, I was visiting back home in MI last week and at a cookout I crossed paths with my old friend. I knew he would probably be there, so I brought the Schrade along and made him a gift of it. He lit right up when he saw it and really seemed to appreciate the gesture; both the gift and that I would remember his boyhood knife after all these years. I'm not trying to toot my own horn here, I just enjoyed having this sort of "folksy" experience.
