Howdy:
My dad has a 497 that my aunt had given him back many moons ago. He lost it for several years. One day, while turning over our old compost heap behind our warehouse, he unearthed it, blade rusty and pitted, brass robbed of its gleam, and the staglon handle shrunken down approximately 0.5" below the guard. It wasn't broken or taken apart by rodents, just shrunk. So...
How can I remove the handle to replace it with a custom carved mesquite one? The handle appears to be held in place by two prongs extending from the tang with a Chicago-type screw securing the butt. Advice MUCH appreciated.
I'll get some pictures up once I'm off work. If anyone has a word on clearing the blade and relieving some of the pits (muriatic acid bath?) that would be a great help as well.
