Hi, This is my first time here, so please bear with me. I recently purchased this knife and am not familiar with this model Schrade ie. 498 which is the only number on the blade. This confused me more as I thought schrade usually used a lettering system to identify handle material. I can't seem to find out to much about it:confused: . Any info about handle material, dates of manufacture and value would be helpful. Thanks so much, tendy

The model #498 was one of Schrade's “49ers” series of knives, and it was manufactured from 1973 until 1979. The handle of these knives was manufactured in two different versions; one was a staglon handle (498S), which last retailed for $18.00 in 1979, and the other was leather-wrapped (498L), and it retailed for $19.50 in 1979. In 1983, we brought the 498S back for one more year, and it still retailed for $18.00.

UH Fan was Schrade's historian, and this is what she had to say about your knife a couple of years back. It is a 498S staglon Delrin handled knife from the "49er" Bench Made series. The "S" and "L" were not a part of the tangstamps.
