I have a Schrade 498 knife in excellent conition. Unfortunately the sheath that came with it is in terrible shape with gouges and cuts thru the leather. As the production on these probably wasn't great, this may be an edercise in futlity but does anyone have any ideas for sources where I might find an original sheath. i already tried e**. Thanks all.

The production of 498s was much higher and for many more years than the others in the series, so it may just be a matter of patience. Perhaps a decent sheath sold with a knife in poor shape. Also, except for a possible model number stamped on the back of the sheath, I think they were all the same. So consider looking for a sheath attached to any one of the eight variations (not including Sears Craftsman sfos).

Thanks Tongueriver:
Can you or anyone else thonk of more places to search than the auction site that starts with e?

Here's what one looks like. That could be a tough one to find, and take some patience. I would look hard on Ebay (most likely place in my opinion to find one) for knife sheaths, and hope you find one that is not necessarily described as a Schrade 498 sheath. If someone happens to have one minus the knife, they may have no idea what knife it goes with. Might even be called a scabbard by some sellers.

Yeah Hawk by it's design, I figured it would be a tough one to find and even harder to find in good shape. It seems to have been a design easy to poke the knife through.

If you want a sheath that fits, not particular about the original, there are generic 5" fixed blade knife sheaths out there that might work out.

This is an SH208, and it "fits most fixed blade knifes with up to a 5" Blade"

You can buy it at quite a few different places on line for less than 10 bucks.

There is also the SH210 for up to 6" blades too...

To compliment Hal's post: search for knife "holster" as well as sheath and scabbard also search "sheef", "sheeth", "sheaf" and any other misspellings you can imagine.
