Hey guys I picked up a Schrade + 708 the other day and was wondering about the history of these little knives. It is about 2 3/4 inches, black (I'm pretty sure plastic of some sort) with a shield and 2 blades -- one is a clip and the other a pen. I'm supposed to get a camera today and when it gets a charge I'll take a picture of it and post it. The reason I was wondering is that I never see these smaller knives for sale on ebay. Any one know anything about these little guys.
Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!!

You must really like the 708 pattern. I remember your post from October of last year where you got one also.

Those harken back to the old Schrade Cut Co. #71085 3/4. In 1951, it was refered to as a serpentine pen knife. The 708 was last listed in 1977, though it's companion pattern, the 708B (black delrin scales) continued to be produced through 1989. The 104OT Minuteman was the same size and blade configuration. It was made from 1991 through the closing in 2004. Another offspring of the 708/718 was the shortlived Uncle Henry Gentleman Jim 706UH ( 1985-1988).

I cannot tell you the current market value for the 708, but if it is in the original packaging, the package and papers might help you to narrow the date of your particular knife. It would not have been made before the last date appearing there. Also if you can post pictures of the knife and packaging, I might be able to find a logo or other detail to help date it. (A Schrade Walden stamp would indicate pre-1973, but they didn't use the '+' designation back then)

Here is the #708 from the Open Stock:

Hi Codger thanks for the info. The camera is still charging -- so tomorrow I will toss a picture into the mix. Mine is smooth black and does not have Walden on the tang. It reads Schrade + 708, and it came with no package. It also has the same shield as the picture you posted however the shield is plain and does not read Schrade. I will post it tomorrow.

Here is the little 708. I guess my question is -- Do many guys carry these little knives.

They're fun to collect. I have a bunch of them (all of those little Uncle Henry patterns). Here's a 705uh, 706uh, and a cracked ice celluloid Ulster (3 blader) It's real sweet. They slip right into the watch pocket in a pair of Levis, as long as you aren't skinning a deer that day ;).

I just did a search on ebay for all the numbers listed above and not 1 shows up -- seems so strange? That cracked ice is a beauty

I have a few I carry once in a while when I want to go lite. Here is crappy picture of my 708B, a Schrade Walden 805 and the 807UH

The 104 is a two blade, the 106 is three blade w/scissors, and the 18Ot is a single blade with a liner lock, one of my favorites.
