I was recently bidding on a schrade 3 blade 896K that I got a little carless on and lost. Item # 200083299089 (in case my pics dont work). I have a knife that has the same shield but on the tang it has a stamp that looks like another stamp over it from what I can make out it says berkshire cut co. providince RI? I think. The stamp on top of it looks different. Do the shields mean anything or were they used among numerous types of knives? .com/img/478206.jpg[/img]

Not sure about your tang stamps, but the Federal (or 'bomb' they are sometimes called) shields are common to most brands from that time period. The 'tipped' E.O. jack seems to be pre WWII celluloid, and looks a lot like an early Camillus, though it was a common pattern for many brands.

This is a "Fairmount" made by Camillus, but with a bar shield.

Here is a "Syracuse", also by Camillus, with Federal shield.
