I have been buying and selling a few of the USA made Old Timers. The 8OT is getting harder to find and of course the prices are going up.

I am just asking opinions of you folks who are close to the subject what you think this example is worth in todays market.

It has a heavy patina of tarnish. Maybe not sharpened at all but for sure the blades are very near full. There are coin rubs on the handle and bolsters. Solid and tight. I would grade it in Excellent condition.

Also what are the thougvhts on cleaning the tarnish some? I usually just like to leave them be.

Thanks for any input anyone cares to give.

Ed

I found two 8OTs yesterday in a hardware store for $26.99 with box & papers. Also a 897UH for $29.99, but my biggest thrill was a LB-8 in a pawn shop for $25. :D

I am a happy camper!

I can give you a relative value

I have a brand new one in a "sharp idea" clam pack I bought on Ebay for about 15.00. I have a new one in the same series box I bought in a hardware store for 17.99. I have one like yours that was like yours when I bought it on Ebay for 17.00 (my first 8OT). I have a brand new one in a brown woodgrain box with the NY tang stamp, the pattern stamped on the back, and a matchstick strike for 30.00. I have one just like the one above, a Schrade Walden in a tube I bought for 30.00.

I have seen the same knife sell as high as 45.00 on Ebay.

Don't clean off the tarnish.

"don't clean off the tarnish" i've read the info re: to clean or not in the Schrades 'r us sticky and he ends with something like "well there are a few simple cleaning measures you can do, but that will be posted another time" (my paraphrasing). did that ever get posted ? what is safe to do ? clean out lint and grit from between liners, wash and oil wooden handles, polish bolsters with flitz ? and don't touch blades ? i'm about to clean an LB7, but that's not collector vintage which is what i think the cleaning issue pertains to more. any guidelines ? roland

One thing for sure. If it's your knife, and you plan on keeping it, you can do anything you want. Before trying anything too radical, try it on a beater, not a nice piece.

Im with thawk if its your knife and your keeping it do as you please with it clean it dont clean it, it dosent matter. if your selling it then probablly leave it alone. I use to try to keep all of my knives perfect, then I realized that wouldnt be collecting for me it would be an investment and I dont plan on selling. Thats just my way of collecting everyone has a differnt opnion but this is a collectors forum and I'd like to think most people here regardless of what they do with there knives(clean them or not) are here cause they collect not as an investment.

I have been trying to check back on this thread for a long time. That darn AOL browser is not a good idea .... That is all I have to say about it.

Thanks for the replies on the 8OT values. Yes, I have seen them go for over $45 on Ebay too.

I know folks in Australia who pay $40.00 for used ones in Excellent condition. They want nothing to do with the new ones.

I have put up one of several models in Mint condition but I have a lot of users. My favorite for Brook Trout fishing is a Mighty Mite 18OT. It is just perfect for cleaning Brookies on the creek. I have a Pal 12OT that sometimes is used for the same thing.

Now if I only had all the ones back that I have left stuck in the bank of the creek I would have a very large collection indeed.

Best Wishes,
Ed

Let me know if you get into any Brookies that require the 8OT. I want to see pictures!

Actually a few of these might have been better to have a 34OT. Maybe even a Trapper.

That looks to have been a fun day. What did you catchem on? I'm not too proud to say I've done the most damage to Brook Trout with good old earthworms.

Actually those came on crawlers which is just a fancy way to say big earth worm. The creeks I fish are just to dense and thick with brush to do any fly fishing anyway. I have used crickets like a wet fly and done just as well so I went back to crawlers since they are so much easier to handle.
