Hey everyone, not too long ago my grandfather gave me a ton of knives and told me about knives that alot of kids had when he was younger called a barlow knife and he did some reasearch and they don't make them anymore but the stye is still around, Case makes them and Shrade makes them and a few more. So I want to get me and him a barlow knife just because he had one when he was a kid I thought it would be nice sence he has helped me with so many of my collections. I found a barlow style knife that was 5 bucks and then I came across a Shrade Old timer, I figured is this is a good knife and won't crap out easily with use I could go ahead and get these sence he already had a shrade old timer knife. So would this be a good knife to get for the money?

Thanks

It's hard to go wrong with an Old Timer knife. Just make sure it's a pre-2004 knife. Those were made in the Schrade factory. The new ones are made in china. Even better if you can find one with carbon blades.

Schrade made a 206 pattern Barlow. I see them on ebay sometimes. That was a decent knife.

The Barlow made by Imperial is also a pretty decent knife for the money.

Don't know if that helps.

Good luck, and be sure to share with us what you decide on.

It is nice looking, but made in china.
I have never seen a USA made Schrade Barlow that looked like that, (and I have been through the Catalogs from the late 1940s to 2004 more times than I care to count).
I wish Schrade had made a Barlow with the saw cut Delrin Old Timer handles.
That is a GOOD looking' knife!

Dale, What about Grand Dad's Old Timer Barlow from 1975 created for the 70th birthday of Schrade?...that had sawcut delrin handles albeit black with brass tonings...thats a great looking Barlow made by USA Schrade.......Hoo Roo.

Larry,
Are you talking about the Granddad's Old Timer Barlow?
That was (as you said) black with brass fancy bolsters.
Schrade did not make a Barlow with the standard brown Old Timer color scheme.

They also made the 206 with orange Delrin and the SC506 scrimshaws, but no Barlows with the Old Timer color scheme of brown saw cut Delrin and nickel silver bolsters.

Darn shame they didn't make them, cause that one made in china is nice looking...

Dale

Like I said I don't care where its made.

"Schrade Knives Collectors Forum Imperial Schrade Corp. - maker of Schrade Knives & Tools, including the famous Uncle Henry and Old Timer Brands - all made in the USA. Since Schrade closed their doors, this forum has become a site for the collectors to meet and share information"(description at page top)

Most of us here do care where they are made. There is continous discussions regarding the new china made schrades versus the real deal usa made schrades. Although they do look cool most of the guys here would never own one unless it was an accidental buy from a sneaky ebay seller. Just cause everything else we are forced to buy day to day is made in china I wont settle for my knives being made there ,as we do have a choice. Dont take this as an attack this is a dicussion forum, for usa made schrades just my two cents - Joel

Zach, as a purely sentimental buy to connect with granddad and share something you have in common, I couldn't think of a better thing to get. It's a really thoughtful thing to do. The knife likely won't stand up to really hard use, at least not like the older Schrades with better heat treat on their steels, but for light everyday use, I don't see that you could go wrong. It's the thought that counts on this one, not the country of origin IMO.

If you do get it, let us know about his reaction!

I'm ordering them in a week or so, I'll let you know what he says, I'm sure he will like it. And we don't use our knives for hard use just simple cutting.

Larry, Dale,

Schrade didn't but as you know Ulster made 2 different O.T. Barlow pattern in the OT color scheme..
The 10 and 12 OT
TTYL

To me the color of the Ulster Barlow looks more like the Imperial Barlow.
It doesn't have the lighter color near the bolsters like the other OTs.
IMHO it is the shield and the contrast between the two colors that really set off that chinese Barlow.

I have to agree with you Dale on the color of the Ulster Barlows looking (and feeling) like the Imperials. It has a hardness that the OT Delrin's dont.
Guess we'll have to wait to see the 12OT..

little size comparison in my hand.

I got these today and I love it they are very nice and my grandpa likes his too. He told me that this is around the same size as the one he had as a kid, I think he really likes it and will show it some good use.
