I'm looking for a good old Barlow. I'd like to get one with carbon steel blades. Do the older Scrade have carbon. What about others? (That story got to me!)thanks!

Beginning of this week I received the MIB Schrade 206 Barlow that I won/bought on eBay. I paid $25 after shipping. They're around. Keep your eyes peeled.

It was the first time I bought a barlow, so I don't really know about other maker's models. But, I can tell you that the Russell Barlow from 1975 is the same as the Schreade 206 - both made by Schrade.

The information that the original poster needs is: Schrade USA is no longer in business. The vast majority of Schrade products you see for sale on eBay, and virtually all Schrades you see in stores are now made by Taylor Cutlery in Chinese factories. They are not of the same quality as the American made products, and are not carbon steel, but a cheap stainless.

Further, most of the "blister pack" style "USA" Schrades that are sold on eBay are "Schrade+" knifes, which are not carbon steel, either.

So the answer is, if you want a carbon steel Schrade you can find one, but you need to be very careful in your shopping. Not even the sellers know what they got in a lot of cases. And then there are those that are knowingly trying to rip off uninformed buyers.

P.S. Some of the few carbon steel Barlows I've seen are on the World Knives site under Sheffield (British) knives. I went through a Barlow phase a while ago, and was surprised to see very few (new) offerings with carbon blades.

Tsenn asked about "older" Schrade's, so I assumed he knew about the Chinese crap floating around. My advice to anyone looking to buy a USA made Schrade is to search through the Schrade forum for old posts on the models you are interested in buying. Study the photos and make sure you know what the real deal looks like. Learn as much as you can. Also, make sure you can read the tang stamp of any knives you bid on.

I have purchased roughly 75 Schrade knives on fleabay and never got stuck with a China/Taylor/Schrade.

(Last night I picked up a Paul Revere for less than $11 incl. shipping)

Good hunting!

thanks guys. Yea, I know about the "new" Schrade. I actually had one of those Schrade Barlows with the Delrin and scrolled bolsters. Of course I regret selling it now because I want it back! What about the Russell barlows made in Germany? Any thoughts on those? thanks again for all the comments and suggestions

Look strongly into the Boker barlows, as they are made from a nice carbon steel and have good traditional looks, especially in stag. I know that these have the old Russell stamp on the bolster, but they are most definitly Boker Barlows. I personally love mine: http://www.discountcutlery.net/en-us/dept_21896.html The internet pictures really don't do the knives justice, they look much nicer in person. Oh yeah, my 1st post!

Wow, they look nice for the $$$.

Looks like i gotta do some research about blade materials, etc.

Thanks for the link

Let me asure you that they are very nice for the money. The have very stout backsprings and also have the half-stop feature to prevent accidental closure on fingers. As I said before they have some form of carbon steel that holds a razor edge and but it fairly easy to touch up. And the stag Boker uses is some of the richest I've seen.

I picked up a NIB Schrade Barlow Scrimshaw series of the Great Outdoors from 1979. (SC-506) It has carbon steel blades & is very nice. Walked in a shop & there it was. As mentioned, they're out there, so keep looking. Good luck.

I liked the looks of them so much I just picked up one in atique green bone and one in stag (both spear blades). My Boker Brown Washboard bone Copperhead was a bargain at $23 on eBay. It has carbon steel blades that hold an edge very well and sharpen up nicely on my Sharpmaker. The fit and finish is better than my newer Case knives and the price can't be beat. Hope the Russell Barlow's (by Boker) are just as nice.........Can't wait!
