When I got interested in "accumulating" pocket knives, it was wanting "just one" Old Timer that lured me in, but I quickly figured out there was way more to Schrade than OT's and UH knives. Early on I was able too pursue the brown open stock Schrades that came in a see through tube. Many were somehow preserved and unused. The Delrin Open Stock knives ran from the early 60's to the late 80's. Maybe a little before that, not sure.
In the early 60's, the jigged Delrin patterns were meat and potato knives in the Schrade slipjoint line, but even then, popularity of traditional pocket knives was on the decline. The number of patterns were shrinking each year, as Delrin replaced cow bone.
In the day, I suppose they were moderately priced working man's knives. In 1962 you could choose from about 48 different "Open Stock" pocket knife patterns. About 30 of them were "stagged" although some were still genuine bone. Lowest retail price in 1962 was $3.65 for a small 2 3/4" jack or pen knife, to $5.95 for a three blade 4" stockman, 861, 880, or 881. Hell, even the 225H, a 5 1/4" two bladed folding hunter was $5.95.
In 1988, the only two left were an 825-RB 3 9/16" stockman for $21.95, and an 808 Junior Stock for $16.95. Good day for knife pictures in Kansas. Here are a few of the ones I've managed scrounge up. Harder to come across now, but still some left to find. I still dream there is an old hardware store out there somewhere, around the bend of a country road, a Walden knife case on the back counter, with yet a few plastic tube knives, or maybe a bone handled 8OT, just waiting to be found.
L-R -> 808, 233, 895, 861, 880
L-R from top -> 804, 863, 236, 293 (clockwise)
L-R from top -> 787, 974, 899, 272 (clockwise)
Whoa, two party crashers -> 218, 708B... who invited these guys?
Statistics come from Larry Vickery's fine Schrade Collectors website. Larry's website, this forum, Dale Vincent (Orvet's) lists, countless contributions from the fellow members, the AAPK website, and the good old auction site are to blame for my addiction. What is your excuse?
Please post additions to this thread. Re-runs and off colored plastic handled Schrades are welcome.
