Schrade made 7 issues of the large clasp or bulldog pattern knife. They were the 13 colonies ( made in 1976 for Jim Parker and Jim Frost ) and sold in a wood frame with the big clasp in a circle of metal embossed handled knives each representing one of the original colonies. It had genuine stag handles. and an etched blade with a scene commemorating our nations birthdate. In 1977 Parker-Frost put out another Schrade issue Custers trail of tears and in 1978 Custers last fight. Both of these knives had etched blades depicting the subject of the issues. Both were in Stag. In 1979 Schrade put out an issue celebrating its 75th anniversary, in two versions a staglon issue with an etched blade showing the old Schrade factory and a stag version with the same scene but the blade etch highlighed in gold layering. In 1980 they did a knife for a set of 4 NKCA commemorative knives this had the old NKCA musuem etch and was also in stag. They did one other issue in this pattern it unlike the others was in scrim for the 125 th anniversary of the Village of Walden. Its blade had the etch of the other two knife factorys that had been in Walden. Of all these knives only the Gold edition of the 75th anniversary edition came with back blade file work. The original artwork for these pieces was done by the then scrimshaw and etching artist Frank Giorgianni. For those of you who may have read some of my postings I really am not as into the later issues or the more common or modern items Schrade did, ( I suppose i should be ) . I rather enjoy the older history of these companies. I have noticed recently a bit of a lack of postings in the older issues so I do not know if you ( the reader)will find this of interest. While I have most of the Barnett, D' Holder, Rodgers, Loveless ect. My real love is the older stuff. In fact it is hard for me to realize that the first issue of these ( clasp issues ) is almost 30 years old.
A while back I dug out an example of all 7 of these knives and did a small display of them. I had the six knives that did not originally come with it filed back to match the one issue ( the 75th ann in gold ). I also had the original
scrim stamps that were used ( for the Walden issue ) so I added them. These scrim stamps are one of a kind and much rarer than the actual knives. I then went to the original artist Frank Giorgianni ( who is a friend of mine ) who no longer does any work for anyone and pleaded with him that since he had done the original artwork would he please make an exception and do the file work for me which he graciously did . ( He likes my venison sausage ). I have included some horrible pictures ( SORRY ) of this set they should give you at least an idea of this group. It is a one of a kind with the artwork and filework both by the original artist, the original scrimstamps, and all seven issues since really the NKCA and 13 colonies were not sold individually they are kind of tough to find individually. I hope you enjoy the pics. LT
