on may 11th i got my 2nd Schrade. ( my first, a 152OT has been my hunting companion for over 25 years). i now have 23, of which 3 are Schrade Walden, and 1 a Schrade Cut Co. most are lightly used, but a few are NIB with papers. as i like to clean/polish/sharpen and use knives, collecting used ones is where i get most enjoyment. 3 recent acquisitions of note (to me) are: a mint Sears Stainless LB7 model 95416 (yes, it is a Camillus, but may have Schrade parts and posts here speak highly of it); a Paul Revere stockman, NIB, papers ($19.42) (to go with my lightly used Liberty Bell); and a NIB with papers 1977 Craftsman "Bowie Stock Knife" (also posted here with positive comments) $29.00. these last 2 were this past weekend, with v. little bidding, so bargain price (i think). it might take a couple of months, but i will post pics. to show my Schrade collection in it's beginnings as all my choices have been based on information in this forum, often as helpful answers to my newbie questions, and hopefully some may find it interesting to see what a beginner chooses. roland

You're on my pace Roland. I started back in September and lost count at about 100. Maybe a little bit addicting. And yes I find it very interesing when anyone posts their collection, new or old.

i think i may have to delete 1 from Schrade numbers, and maybe add 1 to the Camillus division of my knife army. this auction is long closed, so no rules being broken: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250124752916&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=015
i was unsure when bidding, especially as there is no 881Y among the 881s in the sticky pics, but thought if i could get it for a moderate price, i would learn something. the knife has not yet arrived, but i have just read posts explaining how the right to reproduce exactly, both Schrade Walden boxes and tang stamps, went with the sale. regardless of what this knife is, to reproduce knife, box and tang stampings exactly, is in part at least, to purposely mislead. for those of you who have been around awile, i know it has all been discussed before. but for me it is a new discovery and i find it disappointing. i think a well made knife is a perfect harmony of form and function, and embodies integrity. my words, but i'm sure there are others who feel similarly.
please, fell free to comment on my Schrade ? Camillus ?, ??? knife, roland

well my Schrade Walden 881Y has arrived; perhaps i do have an original. the blades are spotless and look brand new. they have never cut anything, there is no tarnishing. the handles/bolsters and backsprings have light scratches and moderate scuffing, which i would equate with many pocket carries. the liners are a little dirty and are tarnished. so in age appearance, the blades and body of knife don't match. it has an Empire (i think) shield (new ones i have seen in pics have round shield) and is stamped: SCHRADE/WALDEN/N.Y. U.S.A. whereas new are stamped "MADE IN U.S.A."
anyone care to check out above link and tell me what i have ? thanks, roland

Looks like a Schrade to me, but better pics would improve the view! Pretty strong evidence on the knife also.

If I had to bet, I'd bet Schrade and I'd put good money on it as well. Not definitive, but the pattern stamped on the back of the master blade with Schrade Walden knives is a good sign.

thanks guys, i think i got lucky ! it's a nice knife and blades are mint, tight, snap, perfect. so it's at least 34 years old and as good as the day it was bought. independant of the fact that i paid $31, i really like this knife, it's got a good feel to it. i'm posting pics. now the dilemma: do i use it ? only 2 pics would attach; 2 others showing either side of entire knife exceeded the 100 kb limit. don't know why, camera is set to lowest (640 x 480) and background is plain (elk leather). i'll try to figure it out later. roland

Roland - You're experiences parallel mine when I began collecting. I would leave the using the knife question up to you. I don't use my Schrade Walden's unless they were bought used, but that's me. Nice Yellow Walden you scored, and I am certain it is the real deal.

As for the picture taking, I use a picture hosting website that is free. You will probably want to use one as well. Your forum experience will be uplifted greatly when you master the move of taking images from your camera directly to the forum without sweating and cussing.

The site allows you to upload and store your JPG files to their site (no charge). There you can label, organize and store your photos in your own gallery. The pics are available to copy and paste into the forum (or email or websites) as you need them.

If you are fairly computer literate, it isn't a hard thing to figure out at all, and I'd be glad to help. Some of the other folks use Photobucket for the same thing. There are other similar photo hosting sites out there.

Photobucket might be a little better documented for support and a little easier to figure out. Seems like the FAQ document on Hunt101, which has instructions, is in LALA land right now. At least for me. I actually use Hunt101, simply because I found it first, but have free accounts on both.

Both of these pics were ones I "took" from the web, when I bought them on eEbay.

thank you thawk. i needed a more experienced opinion to convince me that this 881 is an original SW. perhaps i have read too many posts on cunning repros, Schrade, Remington, etc. but confidence builds with each new acquisition. and i will learn how to use photobucket to enhance my posts. i am almost as new to computers as to knife collecting and time is always short as i am a dad with a 2 yr. old sweet little girl with me 3 days/week and also try to operate a 90 acre property. the last 20 knives i received are still on my dedicated knife work bench awaiting their full inspection and lubrication and feeding with mineral oil. so photobucket is on the to do list, but a little ways down and darn if it is not going to rain today so i must go move irrigation now. thanks, roland

That caution is prudent, and the 881 (and the 293 trapper) has been reproduced after 2004 with a valid looking Schrade Walden stamp, and even the Schrade Walden plastic tube, with Taylor printed on it in little print.
