As a novice Schrade USA Collector, I'm looking for a list of must have books for the Schrade Collector.

I'm looking for any suggestions

Thanks for your help!

Tom,
I suspect that list is going to be different for every person who responds. I put the 2OT at the top of my must have list, but don't have one yet. My favorites are:

LB3
124UH/123OT
804
197UH
194OT

Those are basic patterns and come up on the bay fairly often, but the 123/124, 804, and 197 often bring a premium for some reason.

And of course, there are the older open stock stuff. And Scrimshaws. And fixed blades.
And the list goes on, and on, and on, and on....:D

I apolgize, I should have posted it a little clearer.........I am looking for books specifically addressing Schrade Knives.

I have plenty of knives, although, I could use a few more. I just need to gather some books to augment my collection and to help me understand Schrade a little more.

Thanks again.

Tom

Sorry, Tom, you couldn't have been any clearer. I just read right over the BOOKS in that sentence. Never mind. And sadly, I can't help on that one.

Start with Larry Vickery's great website at the beginning of this forum. Not a book, but most informative!

Waynorth,

I think I have been wearing out LRV's Website (If that were possible). He and the folks responsible for compiling all of that data have done a tremendous job and I go back and visit it very regularly. It is a fantastic resource that we can all benefit from. I appreciate his hard work in trying to preserve a little of this country's knife making heritage.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I think this is the only book dedicated to only Schrade, but it is also dedicated to the Old Timers and Uncle Henry knives from 1959 on. I do not have the book. You will not beat a combination of Larry Vickery's wonderful website, and this forum. All About Pocket Knives has a nice forum too, but not dedicated to only Schrades (this one isn't completely Schrade). Many members cross post in both of these forums. Stick around here, get a membership so you can search, and you'll find more info than you can imagine.

Tom, I wish there were Schrade specific books to be had. The only one I have is the Robert Clemente's Catalog History of Schrade knives. There was supposedly a Schrade book due out last year, but it never materialized, at least that I know of. I think our own history buff Codger was working towards a publication, that may be on hold for now. So for the time being this is the best place to fill your curiosity on the subject.

One book that is handy, although it only deals with knives from the Schrade Cut Co era, is a book that was a reprint of old SCC catalogs. The reprint was done by A.G. Russell and can be found on odd occasions on e-bay.

Brady806, thawk, DaveinNY, Rusty1 and lrv,

Thank you for the responses gentlemen. I only have one book right now (Richard Langstons' Switchblade Guide) and I wanted to see what else may have been available. I do spend quite a bit of time on Larry's (lrv's) website as I stated before and I do post over on AAPK as well. I have been fortunate to have corresponded with several of you via email as well as Philco, Orvet and LT over at AAPK. I think it's great to see how everyone involved in knife collecting is willing to jump in and assist so many people and they aren't even asking for anything in return. I have learned more about Schrade in the last year than I ever did as a kid growing up (with many family members working for Schrade). I appreciate all of your input and I look forward to corresponding with you all in the future.

Tom

Tom,
Have you seen the Schrade lists I posted in the Research Section of AAPK?
Here is a link: http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/schrade_knives/index.php

They badly need to be updated, but I am involved in another project at the moment. I am working with Tom Williams & Larry to put together similar lists for all the Camillus knives. A much more massive project because Camillus was in business for 130+ years as opposed to Schrade's 100 years. A near impossible task except for the fact that Tom was the Company Historian for Camillus and has a lot of old catalogs & fliers.

I guess the Schrade updates can wait a bit longer.

Dale

Dale,

I have seen those listings and I refer to them often:thumbup:
I was just trying to see what else was out there that might help me in my thirst for Schrade knowledge.

Up kinda early this AM are we?????

Thanks Dale

Tom

I have several Imperial/Schrade factory sales manuals that can be added to Larry's site. These manuals were used by the management and sales force at I/S. They contain much information about new products, promotions, pricing, etc. When Dale and I finish going through the Camillus literature we will add the Imperial/Schrade items.

Tom Williams

Thanks Tom.
I am looking forward to that as well as more Camillus stuff! :D
