Schrade Counter-Top Display

Last month I picked up this old Schrade Walden counter-top display. It was pretty beat up and had been "modified" at some point by someone. I thought I'd clean it up and put some of my knives in it as something a little different.

Just wiping it down revealed it was pretty dirty.

But a little work paid off, and the case itself cleaned up fairly well.

The main problem was the display board inside which holds the knives. The original pieces had been pried off and repositioned further apart. Then the whole thing was painted black.

I took it back apart, filled in all the holes, and places where the original board was pulled up. The two crosspieces were actually plywood and while the base one could be glued and pressed back together the piece that holds the blades was seriously delaminating. So I made a new one, with new plastic and brass pins. Painted the whole thing as close as I could get with color matching, and it looks a lot better.

Not being like some of you I found that the Schrade knives I do have won't fit (too long overall and blades are too wide), so I had to pull a few other types out of a drawer to flesh it out, but I'm pretty happy with the results.

I've way too much time and money into it, but I'll leave it better than I found it, and that's important to me.

I'm glad it arrived in one piece for you.
I think it looks fabulous now and I like the blue color.

Hey, I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules , I'm not trying to deal spot in any way and I'm not in any way going to profit from this, just like to point out a heads up for people that are interested in display cabinets since you don't see them everyday, but on the Arkansas hunting net trading post on page 2 or 3, I saw where someone has a Keen Cutter display case up for sale. I apologize in advance if this needs to be removed. Just thought it could be of interest.
 
That is fantastically done, and rescuing a piece of history is NEVER time wasted. Great work, eisman eisman !!!

I am thinking late 1960s to summer of 1973. By 'thinking,' I mean an educated guess. By 'educated', I mean a guess; but it looks late in the Schrade Walden (1946-1973) era. There is a fabulous Schrade website (http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/) which has most of the catalogs, many of which have poor black and white images of the displays current at the time and you might be able to pin it down. If not, at least you will get an education.
 
That was a wonderful labor of love (and elbow grease), it looks great now! Very nice work!
