Could these knives be made at the same factory? Some of the Schrade Customs look remarkably like Rough Ryders.

Yes, it's possible, but my Rough Riders are better quality than the recent Chinese Schrades I have handled. However, I haven't handled any of the Schrade custom series.

Those custom series looks like a RR to me, the BTI Schrades can be rough tho. However I have one thats bone and not delrin thats equal to ant of my RR and some newer Cases as well.

I have this model (858) in both delrin and bone, the bone one is several steps above in overall quality. So BTI can get them made nice if they put in the effort.

Thanks to all for your input. I just ordered a NOS Schrade 5" Custom Series Toothpick. We'll see about the quality when it gets here. You know what they say about curiosity killing the cat!

I like the 858OTB I have.
The "perfect size" for an EDC stockman, in my humble somewhat biased opinion.

It took some effort to get the pull down to a reasonable level on the clip point and Spey/Budding blades though.
They started out between "8" and "9", but I managed to get them to about a "6"... maybe a "5.5", so the knife is useable now.

I don't have any use for a knife I have to fight to open, or that I need a "steel thumbnail" tool to open.

NOS should mean it was made in the US. The comparison to Rough Rider would be more appropriate for the current overseas-made Schrades.

The knife was made in China. Other than the blade not being centered, it's a nice knife.

@ "afishhunter", how did you manage to improve the pull? Just lubrication and use?

Small diamond file and slightly rounded the first tang corner (it was sharp/90 degrees) so it lifts the backspring gradually, not all at once..
It didn't affect the backspring height after I filed it.

I had to do the same to a Boker Scout knife.
