Schrade Cut Co Uncle Henry Knives

Henry Baer announced the intro of the SCC stamp on some of the first commemoratives in the early 1970's. It was used for that purpose intermittently for quite a few years. Look at the early commem flyers on the Collectors-of Schrades-r-us website (Link up top in the sticky "open for viewing")

If I am remembering correctly, that number (878UH) was used on special factory order knives for some customer...a big retailer. A search of this forum might turn it up. It was an occasional practice to move the number up or down one for special orders upon customer request (when the customer agreed to the cost of a special die). As you can see, other than the master blade stamp, it is a production 897UH.

Thanks for the info Michael, I did however look at the early Schrade Walden flyers from Schrades-r-us website to start with, I will check the others out. So given the fact that they are early Uncle Henry knives, do you think they would somewhat be more collectable than the regular models?

I didn't say these were early. In fact, I am not sure what year they were produced. The SCC tang stamp was introduced early (Walden Years). Not sure how long, but believe it was used then for quite a few years, not just in the early '70s. I simply meant the early commems ALSO used the stamp.

Thanks, it seem yet another collectable to add along side the regular Uncle Henry line.

I have one of these 898UH knives and they are shorter than an 897UH, by about 1/4", closed length.

Other differences:
a) The blades are proportionately shorter
b) The pull on the sheepsfoot is on the reverse side of the knife (compared to the shield side on the 897UH)
c) One center pin on the scales only
d) No pattern printed on the woodgrain box
e) Never seen one listed with paperwork

It is exactly the same closed length as an 833UH, for what it is worth.

Additionally, yesterday he sold a similar stamped 886UH (like an 885) for $99.00

EBAY item 180106319285. That was the first 886UH I've seen offered on EBAY.

I've seen the 898UH probably eight times (and bought one).

Further to the information above by thawk, photos of four knives for comparison.

Nice shots Rusty! Mother nature does a great job of "blueing" those blades :)

It really does, I tried to take as much of the blue element out, next time I'll wait for some clouds.

Using the "slat" measurement process, it appears the 886 is a hair shorter than the 885. The blade differences in the 897/898 are visible, but the blades on the seniors seem equal, with exception to the length of the pull, although I have a NY stamped 885 with the longer pull.

Rusty - did yours come in a box, and if so was there any paperwork, or did the box have a pattern printed on the end?

thawk, No And No, the brown boxes were not marked except for the Uncle Henry Gold script on top of the boxes, there was also no paperwork. would of been nice to find something.

just plain beautiful knives! the UH line is my favorite. i have yet to see any other staglon handles match the beauty of a genuine AMERICAN made UH.
