I only discovered the joy of collecting Schrade knives a couple of days ago, but like everything else in my life, I jumped in head first. It started when I dug out my father's old 34OT. Curiousity made me do some research here on BF, and before I could help myself, I bought a couple more Schrade's on the auction site.
My fate was sealed when Thawk and Codger_64 posted pictures in the "Schrade 34OT help" thread. I saw those pictures and I just couldn't stand it any longer. I knew was in for a ride.
Thawk posted a picture of 11 34 OT's. I can't explain the feeling I got when I saw that picture. I could imagine the feel and heft of the knives. I could imagine the steely smell, and what it would be like to hold 2 or 3 or all 11 of them at once. I could hear the sound of one knife gently tapping against another as they touched. I thought to myself that one day I will make it real for me.
Then I took in the picture of the 100th anniversary knives posted by Codger_64. I looked and looked until I could no longer stand it, and I finally had to buy one from the auction site. I paid a little bit too much for it, but it ain't about the money...
Somebody help.

I found my dad's 34OT a few years ago:)
Schrade is the "apple pie" in the knife world..IMHO

: AS AMERICAN AS APPLE PIE - "America in So Many Words: Words that have Shaped America" by Allen Metcalf & David K. Barnhart" (Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston, 1997) has a section on the subject --"1697 apple pie." "Samuel Sewall, distinguished alumnus (1696) of Harvard College and citizen of Boston, went on a picnic expedition to Hog Island on October 1, 1697. There he dined on apple pie. He wrote in his diary, 'Had first Butter, Honey, Curds and cream. For Dinner, very good Rost Lamb, Turkey, Fowls, Applepy.' This is the first, but hardly the last, American mention of a dish whose patriotic symbolism is expressed in a 1984 book by Susan Purdy, 'As Easy as Pie': 'This is IT - what our country and flag are as American as. Since the earliest colonial days, apple pies have been enjoyed in America for breakfast, for an entrée, and for dinner. Colonist wrote home about them and foreign visitors noted apple pie as one of our first culinary specialties.' We cannot claim to have invented the apple pie, just to have perfected it." But here's the surprising part. The expression "as American as apple pie," the authors say, is not that old. "Apple pie figures in our figurative language, too, as in the expressions 'simple as pie' (since everyone supposedly knows how to make apple pie) and, though not an Americanism, 'apple-pie order' (1780). But it was only in the twentieth century, apparently in the 1960s, that we began to be 'as American as apple pie.'"

Hi,

I am lwt210, and I admit I have a problem. I am a Schrade-aholic.

The first step to a cure is admitting you have a problem.

Welcome to the jungle.

Sometimes just having this forum helps to soothe an itchy trigger finger. But not always. You can always get a sympathetic ear here though. My affliction continues.

Rprocter has helped me several times when I was feeling overly obsessive. And yes, you all do need an 858 for sure. And a 61OT...

Good luck collecting!

A goal! 858, and a 61OT. Let's see, as soon as all of my recent purchases arrive, I will have a 34OT, a 108OT, a 8OT, a 77OT, another 34OT (I bought this one as a 84OT), and a 100th Anniversary 34OT in Collectors Tin. So that's 858 minus 4 leaves 854, and if the 100th Anniversary 34OT counts as different from the regular 34OT, then its 853 and counting...
Now to do a search on the 61OT to see what that is... So far I'm having a blast!

Got the 61OT but do hot have an 858. Here is the 61 (not my picture) and it is a great knife! Dang! went back and looked at the 858 and that is a big honking knife. Boy that's nice.

Thawk- nice collection there!
I had one of the stockman's like you have there-I think it was named a "ramrod"?
Don't recall the # stamp, but it is to the immediate right of the 34OT on your pict. I forced it onto my brother as a birthday gift as he is a one knife guy who has always been reluctant to take a new one from me as he is so happy with his 34OT that he's toted for like 25 years....well, well worn and sharp. When he opened the gift, he saw the brown box, knowing the real ones are no longer made, he was elated when he opened the box because so many people have never even seen the pattern. I believe it is the same as the old UH858 serpentine stockman. It was nice to see him really happy about rotating another one "in".
Also, I have one 858, and I just stumbled onto it at WOOLWORTH'S which used to be in the Vista mall near Camp Pendleton, Ca (Oceanside/Vista). I had always thought I had a good idea of all the models until I saw about 5 model 858's in a display without boxes marked @ $13 each. Had to have one and I guess should've bought them all, but I was much younger and had a thinner wallet in 1988. :)

You are correct Runninmike, the 98OT is the Ramrod. The 98OT is a nice size knife to carry. Five 858 "Lumberjacks" wow! Guess the other four have been sold by now. :(

yep, the Woolworth's is gone too. It was about 23 years ago. $13 was still cheap back even then. I realized only later how kind of rare the 858 was.
Best, Mike

awww come on guys! (and gals)
Please stop with the pretty pictures. I personally have a 165 problem. My wife has caught me several times LATE into the evening with my edition of PlaySchrade. I sneak into the forum while at work when they are threatening layoffs. And recently I have picked up a few COPE's and SKOAL's, and a cute little Honesteel I keep on the side. Now I am chasing a Navitool!
Help!

You don't have a problem yet. Go to top of page click on OPEN for VIEWING, click it , go haveway down page to COLLECTORS CORNER, click on. Thats where the people with a REAL problem live! lol, have fun, happy collecting.

you just missed a navitool on the bay. i was lucky bought one for much less than that about 4 months ago.

It's only money.
Nothing like a nice collection of blank to cheer the soul!

I have a problem too. I don't talk about it with my dear wife much. Here is a snapshot of my addiction. It isn't part of the subcategories which include 18 different 165's or 31 different hunters or 47 different 8 frame stockmans or 11 different 804s or ......
