just ordered a scrade extreme survival knife for 16.99 before shipping from smokymountainknifeworks.com . the total including shipping was $ 25.13. someone please give me reviews of this knife. i know nothing about it except that around 2002 it had a price of $100. how does this knife perform

You just ordered a Chinese copy of a Schrade knife from SMKW. Since Taylor bought the brand names at auction in late 2004, he has imported several different patterns of knives with the "Extreme Survival" name used on them. All of the Chinese Taylor Schrade copies I have examined personally were lacking in fit and finish. Hopefully your knife will be better. Be sure to give us a review when you get it.

thanks- when i get i am gonna put it to use and i will report what it is like. online it looks just like the old schrade of the past , put looks aren't everything.

Most of the new Taylor line looks like older Imperial Schrade patterns, and they are, for the most part, identical in pictures. Holding them side by side the differences are more obvious. Particularly on the folders I have examined, the function is vastly different.

Taylor is importing some newer, more unique designs which are intrigueing. I don't remember the model numbers of the two I have seen, but they are yellow Delrin handled.

It will be well worth it if you could get your hands on the old Schrade Trail Boss knife. A better survival knife for the money is the Gerber LMF II - $75.00 at knivesplus.com - you can't lose.

I'd vote for that. Good stainless knife with a non-slip handle, new every week on survivalbay for less that $30 or used (scratched & dirty) for $20 or less. They are discontinued but remain in good supply. Just watch out for the Chinese copies of these too.

The pattern number is 140OT if you look for one.

Yeah, I saw the same knife a SMKW, It kinda looks more like a bayonet than a surivival knife, But that's a good price. They really beat you on the shipping , don't thay?

I don't remember if it is hollow ground. The last Trail Boss I had was 10 years ago when Schrade was still made in the USA. There are a lot of differences between the China made blades of today and the original Schrades.

I've been trying to do a little research on the types of steels used for the China made and the US made Schrades. One source told me that the new Chinese made trail boss is Carbon Steel. It has been difficult to find any specs on the Originals.

Both the original Schrade Safe-T-Grip knives and the new Chinese copies are 400 series stainless steel. There are vast differences in the quality of heat treat and quench, and cryo treatment. The 140OT Trail Boss is hollow ground.

Being produced beginning in the 1993 - 2004 period, all of the original knives in this series sport Schrade+ stainless blades hardened to 56-59Rc. “Schrade+” steel was actually a trademarked name used for at least two different stainless steel alloys. First used in 1993 was 440A. Then a change was made to 420C. As of this time, there is conflicting information about when this change took place, but it seems to have been sometime after the 2000 production year.

In 1995, the 140OT Trail Boss pattern was added to the series (eventually consisting of ten patterns including three lockblades and three fillet knives) and it listed for $39.95. It had a 10 5/8" overall length, making it the largest hunting pattern in the TPR line, and weighed 6.6 ounces. The blade was a hollow ground Schrade+ stainless 5 5/8" clip point with two fuller grooves. This was one of the very few Schrade knives ever to use fullering. The green molded TPR handle was the same component used on the previous Safe-T-Grip knives The sheath was 10 3/8" overall (#7050123). The tangstamp was SCHRADE+ over U.S.A. 140OT. It was produced a total of nine years. This pattern is one which may be found with the black handles and 140OTB designation.

Thanks for the info. Buy the way, what is survivalbay? I've been trying to find a replacement for my ten year old Trail Boss.

Thanks for the reminder! My granddaughter will soon be six years old also!

What's the model number of the Schrade Extreme Survival knife you bought, mblackfu? Some models are better than others.

Guess we'll never know.

To make a long story short, I'd stay away from the Schrade Extreme Survival knives that are constructed of stainless steel. On the other hand, those that are constructed of carbon steel (e.g., the SCHF2) have proven to be quite durable.

Hope that helps. :)
