Great forum,
Is there any other SchradeFilletaholics out there?
I have been watching for the last couple of weeks and have not seen much talk about fillet knives.
The 167 Steelhead and 147OT,1470TB are some of the best fillet knives I've used.
I bought a couple of nice ones off e-bay but have not been able to find them
anywhere else. Don't know what it is, but I get a lot of satisfaction from just sitting around and sharpining these knives.

THanks, Rick

Welcome, Rick. Glad you found us.

There's a certain satisfaction too in using a fine filet knife that's been well made and sharpened... Making that cut down on a walleye just behind the gills, turning it, feeling it glide and cut as it slices off that most delicious of seafood. I like a flexible blade, generally, one I can push down hard on, bending the blade at an unreal angle.

I'd rate the Schrades right up there with the Rapala/Martinnis/Normarks. Here is a couple of more you may not be familiar with, that one of the other forum members turned me onto. He gave me one of them, as a matter of fact.
Top one is the massive MA6 which is 12 1/2" long when opened, (middle is a special issue Rapala Club knife) and the bottom is the MA6, 10 3/4" long. All three are lockbacks... I would guess that the MA6 is the largest production lockback knife ever made.

I don't own one, but maybe somebody else can show us the smaller UH, the 168?

Hope you become a regular contributor! New topics and new members always welcome!

Glad you finally decided to post! We Schradeophiles take a vote and selectively ignore a particular knife pattern each month just for this very reason! See? It worked! :D

There have been discussions on fish knives (toothpick style), and George Schrade's hunting and fishing knife in the not too distant past. And I am sure there have been some on the small bird and trout blades, my favorite over the longer blades. Most collectors have at least one or two fillet knives, and then a preference for flexible, medium, or stiff blades depending on their filleting style if they are a fisherman. I only have the three from the Safe-T-Grip series, the 146OT Minimum Flex (5 3/8") , 147OT Pro Fisherman (7 1/2") , and 246OT Maximum Flex (5 3/8"). Schrade did make some nice ones in the Uncle Henry line though. The 167UH Steelhead (7 1/2") and the 168UH Walleye (5 1/4"). Of course there were the Irish fillet knives too.

Welcome Rick!

Phil, those are very cool.....

I've not seen one of the Irish fillet knives. I'll wager that they are a.........

STOUT knife.

Bill

P.S.
Didn't LT tell us about a trip to Ireland? I don't remember if he bought any fillet knives there. Maybe he'll show us some as well.

Welcome,

Sorry no Schrade filleting knives, I do have these though, 12" Sabatier, 6" Marttiini and a thick and wide 5" Wingen Othello:

Classy knive, Luis.

Interesting thread. Any more of you guys got some fillet knives to show us?

Schrade made both flexible and non-flexible fillet knives, letting the fisherman match his knife to the catch. Catching mostly smaller fish, under ten pounds, I prefer those with a lot of flex. I have one of each from the Imperial-Frontier series (you guys know I like those), the flexible one having an F after the model number.

Sorry, looks like the pics won't work.
While on the subject of fillet knives though,do any of you know anything about the GF45 and GF65 Professional Bass Fillet Kife with the graphite handles? My 45 just arrived and seems to be a very nice knife in original package.

Thanks, RHP

I have not seen one of the graphite handled fillet knives. Nor this one, which I just saw on ebay. Supposedly, it has 'Micarta' handles, but that is an often misused term. I just don't know.

And here is two pics of upstream's knife. Neat.

Fillet knives are generally not real expensive, and every knife company makes them. Which makes for a fun one to collect. Say as a 'pattern' collection (obvisously, by my screen name, you can tell I collect texas toothpicks, which leads to me picking up a specimen of almost every knife manufacturer ever). That's fun and interesting for some of us.

Anyone know about the graphite handled ones from Schrade, or this one I am showing?

Phil

TEX, the Graphites are stapmed "Schrade+ USA GF65" The one that is supposed to Micarta is stamped "Schrade+ USA LTD" I paid 28$ apiece for the gf65 and gf45 and 53$ for the Micarta handle one, there is another one listed with a buy it now price of 59.95. I'm sure thats more than they are worth ,but I could not find anything like them anywhere else. I guess that makes me one of those dumb s.o.bs driving up the prices but at least they are in my knife drawer now.
Thanks Rick

Here are a couple of MA folding fillets. This was a nice package since it was sold with a free plastic lure box. one is a MA-5 and the other a MA-6. ( both are new very old stock) the one with the thong has a lil bandit attachable stud. I carry one of these in each of my vehicles and have them all around I really like this knife. One of my favorite uses is stopping at my gun club with a 2 lb brick of chedder and a vacuum package of those sausage ends sold at Gander MT. I also have a small cutting board. So I am usually welcome when I show up UMMM it must be my personality. Anyway the MA is perfect for the cheese. The stud allows one hand operation. I take it off when filleting. Oh yes sometimes I even force a beer or two down to make the cheese go down better. There is also a pic showing four Schrade UH style fillet knives. one is real stag one has an etch one is just a blank and one is the standard version. I did not dig out the newer 147 OT version. LT

Thank you LT.....

I knew you would have some nice ones. Looks like Fillet-gumbo!
We appreciate those great pictures.

Bill
