Hello all. I know this has been discussed here before but I do not have the ability to search the forum so I have to ask. I have also searched the web and finally gave up.

I have a 165DU stamped with an "E". What letters represent what years?

Thanks

Rick,

First, thanks for the search help. That is phenomenal!

Second, thanks for the reference to the post, which incidentally was started by me. I have now copied the data into a word document and filed it under "knives" so I won't lose it.

Third, thanks for reminding me of that black day when I got bashed to smithereens for sniping Codger, to whom I owe much thanks for sharing his knowledge over the past year.

Sorry for my poor taste in picking a thread, I didn't read the hole thing before I linked it.
You do have to watch out for those Koala bear traps. I wouldn't worry though, we all step on some toes sometimes.

You sniped me? Did I forgive you? I really don't remember! Heck, they are only knives. And if I remember the knife correctly, I found one of the same issue later. I don't hold grudges. Life is too short. And besides, like Rush Limbaugh's "talent", my knives are only on loan to me as long as I am here.

Wanna know what brightens my day? When I learn some new obscure fact regarding my favorite knives and share it here. And people appreciate it.

Oh... today's factoid? In spite of what we have been told by experts, Sears did not first sell Craftsman branded pocketknives after WWII. Nope. They appeared alongside Dunlaps and Sta-Sharps in 1943! And while the Dunlaps and Sta-Sharps were still Camillus knives, the Craftsman knives were...Ulsters!

Upstream,
All is well. Codger and I have sorted it all out, and he ended up with a BEauty. Much nicer than the one I got. It was in a previous lifetime anyway!
Knife guys are the best. Oh, knife gals too.

...All's forgiven Bridgy.......I was just defending our beloved old Codge.. we will all be roofless and toothless and ugg'ed and bugg'ed one day our selves!...besides I take my worm tablets regularly now so much nicer to be near......there is a full copy of the original Schrade Hallmark certificate explaining the date system on page 10 of 11 of Larry H Downunder Collectors Corner on Schrades R Us showing the knife as well if you're interested.
Have a knife day now ya hear.. ya'll. Hoo Roo.

Larry,
That's phenominal, thank you. I have saved a picture of the doc. I recently picked up another 165 DU with the "E" and no box around it. I will post a picture of the hallmark here later today.

Greg

May've posted this ol' boy before...but, in keeping with today's factoid, here is my STA-SHARP. Tipped main blade, but still an honest knife of fine fit and finish.....

Hope you can make out the mark...

Certainly don't mind seeing a nice old knife again, Bill!

Here is the "groundbreaking" item which led to the mentioned revelation, a page from the 1943 Sears catalog. The book itself hasn't arrived yet, but I will get better scans when it does. In the meantime, the seller's photos are appreciated!

There were more surprises from the 1945 catalog. I'll have to send this one to Frank Trzaska:

Here's that picture of the "E" on my new 165 DU. Just wanted to share. I found it odd that there was no box around the "E".
