My collection is mainly Schrade lockbacks and I have been wanting one of these sets for a while so I jumped at this set when I saw it though I did pay $120.00 for it. I rationalized this by thinking it's still less than the $150.00 1981 MSLP but really I just wanted them and snapped a little ;)

These were made in 1981 in England but were scrimmed by Bill Feeney out of Bedford, Mass. The handles are white bone.

Here's links to the vintage ads:

Larry did a great job of showcasing these and other I*XL sets in this thread (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...of-Schrade-I*XL-Collection.?highlight=heralds) so I didn't include any bling here but I thought the knives deserved a closer look.

Thats a nice set, Dave! Now, unless you already have it, your mission is to find the other set with the canoe and other folder. I'm thinking it's a stockman, but can't recall for sure. That's the one I haven't been able to snag yet.

Nice find Dave, I would probably have paid that much for these as well. ;)
BTW, What is the scale material? It looks like real bone? Also, the I.X.L Schrades are not that common it seems.

Yup, that's what happens. Knife collector "think" tells me that because I bought two great little knives I now need two more and not two less. :o

Bruce, I*XL and Schrade only partnered for a few years so that cuts down on the numbers you see and they were also quite pricey (no delrin on them) which also might have meant less sold. There is great info on the whole Schrade/ I*XL connection here in this forum but I will leave it to you to search for it.

Very nice knives Dave, I have one of the boxed sets which came with a stockman and canoe pattern. Seems funny they wouls send the knife skeletons and handles to England and then send them back to the USA after the knives were completed. I would of thought that the blades were made in England sent State side and assembled here with the various handles, including the Feeney Scrims.

Thanks for adding the pic Russell. That rounds off the thread nicely.

These knives did take quite the journey before they were sold. Can't fault the workmanship though. Nice stuff. I might have to collect more I*XL in the future. I find the prices vary widely on these depending who wants them. Sometimes real good deals are to be found on certain auctions.

I just did a Google search on this set & found this thread... I found a set here in the house my father got a year or 2 before he passed. I know he didn't have it long because I know we would have talked about them & such. I do know the set is numbered 0657 so thats not bad out the run of 2000 so Dave thanks for the info.

Glad this thread helped, roadiez. Now I have the stockman / canoe set as well so I'm adding some pics of my examples. This month I've been displaying all of my bone scrimshaw knives so I thought I'd take a sweet family photo while they were all out. The Case "Grouse" trapper is a bastard son but related through the Sports Afield 100th Anniversary set. Handsome fella too... Enjoy!
