hi, yesterday a buddy at work brought in a bunch of schrade new in their box knives, like a kachina with sheath, folding hunter scrimshaws, a lonestar?i forget the name with beaded sheath a 507 scrimshaw with raccoons, plus a 51ot plus its box white cover sheath. my question is why are the 51ots bring a high price ,when were they made and ,2 how many are in the indian series, the names and if,i recall wasnt one of the indian series harder to find than the other ones, and what was its name.thanks for any info.He isnt a knife collector ,long story how he got them, but he wants more info on them than i can give him.thank you.p.s. these knives are as new in the box as you can get even with their white box covers.

There were six knives in the indian series. The Kachina, Bear Cult, Sundance, Morning Star, Thunderbird, and Turtle. I am assuming the one you are referring to as harder to find is the Lance which wasn't officially part of the Indian series it was made specially for Montgomery Ward. However, because it goes along with the indian theme as well as having the beaded sheath, some people consider it one of the collection.

The main six were produced between 81 and 86, one each year. The Morning Star was produced in 82 and the Kachina in 83. There were between 8,000 and 10,000 of each of the six produced. If I recall correctly the Lance had a production of only 2,000 but don't quote me on that. Hopefully a more experienced and intellegent member will drop by and correct me if that is wrong.

According to Robert Clemente's book, the 51OT was only produced from 78-81 which, with such a short production range, explains the high prices. However, with as many of those knives as are showing up on the market, the prices definately seem a little high for me which is why I haven't snagged one myself.

The 507 with the raccoons was produced in 84.

Hope this helps.

Silas

Thanks for posting that for me Codger. My best number on the Lance just says less than 6000.No firm number and no source to quote.Arnold

thanks for the replies, now i know about the indian series, and will let my buddy know.I told him about this site and he will check it out as he never heard about blade forums.

I just received a set of the Indian knives and some have the serial number on the underneath side of the bolster instead of on the front. I've never seen serial numbers in this odd place. Can anyone tell me where the serial number is suppose to be on all six knives? I have all but the Lance. Thanks, PL

I finally found something on this knife, designated MW-10. The order was for 2,500 pieces and it was for a Christmas promotion. The first scene suggestions were a hunter with spear running through the woods after game, or sharpening his spear outside a tipee. I believe we can thank Mr. Giorgianni's creative talents for turning the first rough ideas into what we now know as The Lance.

It's in the same place as the serial numbers on mine and the other 507SCs that I have.Arnold

Great! I've got another that has the serial number in the same place, but couldn't get the picture to come out. I'm a fairly new Schrade collector and have read about counterfeit knives so was just checking. I really appreciate your response. Thanks so much, PL

Glad to help.Welcome to the forum. Not many counterfeiters on Schrades yet ,not enough money there, just watch out for the China Schrades. There QC is terrible and there Schrades in name only.Arnold

Post briefly discussed high prices for the 51 OT. In addition to the short production period, it is a very fine knife. The wide handle fits comfortably in my hand and it does a great job skinning deer and elk.

Great, if not sad, to see Arnold's, AKA Tobyrogers post from 2006 in this thread.....I remember purchasing a few of Arnold's beloved Schrade's shortly before his passing.....a passionate collector of USA Schrade's when virtually no one gave a damnn about them....they could pass through Ebay without a bid prior to factory closure....it's how I ended up with about 7 2Ot's in the earlier years...plus about 2500 others before my wife found out I was an addicted Schradeaholic.....lmao!...
Codger, "me ol mate" you knew Arnold better than most I believe...we lost a few dedicated Schrade collectors along the way.......Hoo Roo

Circle of life and all that. I miss Arnold and several others. Yet it is true that the passing of collectors assures the recirculation of our knives in the market. Thus we are after all mere temporary custodians. I am trying now to educate my adult son on Schradeology. In part because it will be up to him to determine the fate of my collection after I am gone. Hopefully by then I will have whittled it down to a manageable size and scope.
