hello all. as im sitting here sharpening a schrade "old timer" fix blade for a friend, i was wondering what you guys thought about the overal quality of schrade knives. i dont think that they are the best, but that they are decent.

opinions?

I think the original Schrade knives (2004 and earlier) were hit-or-miss. Some of their lines were very good, while others were not so great. If you ordered something based on the "Schrade" name, you were never sure what to expect. (Ditto with Camillus knives.)

The OldTimer series is one of the "good ones" from Schrade. Even at the very end when production was rushed, customer satisfaction was not a sales issue (they knew they were closing), knives were made to be sold at incredible discounts, and warrantee returns were not a factor, the Old Timers were still a good buy.

Most Schrades were decent. I always liked their traditional slipjoint pocketknives, which in my opinion is what they did best. I never owned any of their fixed blades, but they were popular in my neck of the woods. Their modern one-hand opening folders, well.....They were awful. :barf:

Since their demise, I haven't bothered to look at the current Taylor Cutlery imports bearing the Schrade name, so I can't comment on them

ok cool. thanks

so does anyone know about what kind of steel they used in theses knives? im guessing 440 or 420

Yes, the Old Timers in carbon steel were the ones I liked.

Their modern stuff like the Lake & Walker, Beast, X-Timer, Simon, Nitro, Avatar and the dreaded Cliphanger series were all a waste.
