Hello again, Got another question.
I was looking for a knife recently and came across a nice schrade old timer new. I'm guessing it is one of the last ones to leave the factory before it was closed. I'm wondering what the quality of blade it might have on it. It says made in china on the blade which makes me think twice since it's online and kinda a hassle to buy online. I ran into one like it today locally but it just aint an old timer and is most likely made in china as well.
So my question is, what's the quality of the blade on the old timer compared to other made in china knives around the same price range?
The knife i came across today was a ranger if that helps.

Get a real U.S. made Old Timer from eBay and you'll be much happier. There are lots offered and if you're patient you can find a good deal.

Taylor produces Schrade now, in China. If the one you saw online says China then it's a Taylor. USA Schrades have "Schrade+" on the tang.

Overall though, Taylor knives aren't the worst. Don't expect any phenominal quality or materials though. I would suspect though, that if you tried to find an American Old Timer, the only difference you'll find is 1095 instead of 440 A/B and stag instead of delrin--that's hoping they're even using delrin anyway.

If you're just looking for a good and usable pocket knife I wouldn't knock Taylor until you try them, but look at Steel Warrior and Rough Rider first; they're produced by United Cutlery which is also a china company, but the quality that I've seen on them so far is really nice.

Yeah Taylor Brand knives are obviously a long shot from the real Schrade knives but not the worst in the world. That being said they are Over Priced. They try and use that Schrade name to their advantage (as they should). and like Kenny b said Steel Warrior is OK. But if i HAD TO buy a china I would probably go with a Buck. they have i think the Best quality control over there and they basically do everything the exact same as here including sending to China most the materials needed, and they are constantly "looking over there shoulder" All they really are doing is getting the labor cheap. Chuck himself once told me that they stopped allowing them to package them over there (the plastic) so they could inspect every one. There great knives for the $ and u still get there "FOREVER WARRANTY".. great deal.

Just a side note. Only about 5% of Bucks stuff is made in china. They hate it about as much as we do. Chuck again had said THE ONLY REASON were there at all is Walmart wanted them to meet certain price points they just couldn't. and believe it or not WalMart he said was something like 25% or 30% of their business. so we gotta understand that move. Thanks

^^^This. The only thing I'd change is the portion in bold: many of the USA-made Old Timers have Delrin handles, too.

They're not bad but I'll mirror what the others have said. You can usually find a used one made in the USA for not a lot of money. I think the USA made Schrades are every bit as good as Bucks and can cost a little less if you look. The USA Schrades are getting snatched up by collectors pretty quickly from what I've seen. A Buck would be a great alternative. The Rough Riders have gotten really good reviews for a Chinese made. Good luck!
