Hi,

I have a schrade pocketknife with what appears to be an "X" or a cross, which is stamped
over the normal blade/tang markings...

what exactly does this signify?

thanks!

I got one today from a guy here at work. It's a 8801 Heritage. I'd like to know the same.....

The X was one way that Schrade marked a knife as a "second" or reject. Sometimes they ground, struck through or otherwise defaced the marks. Some of these knives were sold through the company store to employees. Many, many emerged from the bankruptcy auction in 2004.

Quite often, the defect is very hard to see and sometimes it is apparent with close examination.

Yeah. Mine is actually missing the blade etch and also has no shield.

Here's mine....

I have an 896K with the butter & molasses handles that is a second as well. Tang stamp is completely ground off. The defect on that knife is that one of the bolsters was not cut square on the end that butts up to the handle scales. When they pinned the scales, it caused that end to raise up ever so slightly and crack at the pin. Unless you're looking for it, you can't see it. Otherwise, it is flawless.
