Schrade LB7 side play

I have an old (30 years) Schrade LB7 which has a slight side play of the blade.

There is no apparent damage or excessive wear and I can't remember what caused it ; )

Also there is no play through opening motion until the blade snaps into the lock position. If I pinch the frame just behind the blade it'll remove the play. It seems repairable but I am not sure exactly what method to use.

Anyway is there a way, procedure to tighten the side play of the blade?

Thank You. . .

Jim

Use a .010 slackner (feeler gage with a notch cut in it so it will slide in on either side of the pivot pin) and peen the pivot pin.

Well I hit the pivot pin a few whacks with the hammer and punch and she's tight now but I did scratch the brass a "little" bit.

I used some Mother's polish and remove some of the scratches.

What is the quickest easyest method to reemove all the minor scratches from the brass?

Thank You,

Jim

I would use a soft muslin buff in my buffer and No Scratch Pink compound.
Or you could use jewelers rough instead.

Let us know how it comes out.

I have no buffer or muslin or no scratch pink compound or jewler's stuff, think primative.

Maybe I'll take the hint?

Maybe I'll use the pillow case (muslin?) and Mother's polish a little bit longer?

It never was a thing of beauty to me and I assume that I used (abused) it a lot in the past. I have an old Buck 110 but I used the Schade LB7 mostly and the Buck stayed in the drawer. All I remember is how sharp Schrade LB7 was (is) I do have a few sharpeners ; )

The Mother's polish polishes the brass to a mirror like finish but the little scratches are still visible.

It sounds like you are on the right track Jim.
I don't know how abrasive Mother's polish is. If it is abrasive enough It will probably work. If not you might try something more abrasive, perhaps Brass-o will work,

Another possibility is sandpaper, VERY fine sandpaper.
I would do it like this:

1200 grit then move to 1500 grit and then 2000 grit. These should be available at your local auto body supply house.
After that I would switch to Micron paper (available at a knife supply house like Jantz Supply).
4000 grit micron paper, then 6000 grit, and finish up with 8000 grit.

After those steps it should be ready to polish out with the Mothers polish.

Another possibility, depending on how deep your scratches are, is an automotive rubbing compound. You might even have a can in your garage.

Let us know how you come out.

Wildjim: great question.
Dale: Great answers ! thanks
Wildjim: buy more LB7s ! i have about 20-25, all from ebay, mostly used, zero blade play, often for $20 or less ! one of the greatest production folders ever !

I have so many other knives to use that "practically" function better (like one handed operation) than the Schrade LB7 but I don't like to keep something around thats not working properly. As you say its easier and maybe less expensive to just replace the knife. But spending money for another knife I would buy something else and still have the problem ; )

I had actually forgtten about it for decades until I got the I need a knife bug again. I just purchased a Schrade XT1B camp knife as I am leaning towards fixed blades these days. I can buy wholesale so I get knives a lot cheaper (at cost) than the lowest Ebay sales.

is your Schrade XT1B an 'older' Schrade USA or the the current Taylor China knife ? i.e. can you still get wholesale on original USA Schrades ?

I am sure most all the USA Schrades are gone. The Schrade XT1B I recently purchased has no country stamped anywhere I can find on the blade. Its stamped Schade on one side and XT1B on the other. I am happy with the appearance and quality feel and it sharpened well. Well worth the $14 I paid for it.

I plan to use it on a few camping trips later this spring. It should be a perfect all a round camp knife.
