Does the serial number on my bear paw have relavence to the year it was manufactured. And could anybody tell me the year or years this knife was made? the serial starts with a V followed by several numbers.Any info would be much appreciated, thanks. And when did they add the uncle henry on the blade tang on the LB7? and thanks again.

Yes. The number on the knife can help to date them as can the number of pins and placement of them in the wood portion as I recall. There are posts here detailing how to read that and get a better idea of how old yours is. I forget right off what I learned researching my own LB7 but I'm sure one of the other gents here more learned on it will help you out.

Being a "V" it indicates it was obviously later in the alphabet. Mine is a P. What I do recall is the digit count also being relevant. What I mean is if there are three numbers, or four numbers or five behind the letter. Mine is a P with four numbers behind it for example, and if yours is a V with four it would be from the same series and mine would be older I take it. If it had three numbers behind it though yours would be older than mine as I recall what I read. I believe the info. I've conveyed is correct but I'm sure I'll be corrected if not.

The alpha prefix was adopted after the first million or so knives had been serialized, up to 999999 I suppose. This point was reached some time in 1980. They then went to A00001-A99999, B00001-B99999 and so forth until they ran out of alphas after Z99999. The pins went from four in the cover to three in the cover around serial #N35001. They then went to dual alphas for a while. The Uncle Henry Signature appeared around serial #X29369. When the rotation went to double alphas, the serials went to seven places. AA00001-AA99999, AB00001 and so forth. Serializing was ended after BB*****, or at least that is the highest number I have recorded so far. Not long after the 1984/5 intro of the Sharp Idea box, they dropped the serials and registration.

Serial V****** would fall sometime between 1982 and 1985.

G'Day Paul, No its not right mate,Serials had long gone by 2004.Serials would have been in the white Uncle Henry with gold lettering box with old style replacement certificates. How do you know your box is 2004?
LB'5 Smokey one of my favourite size practical knives for peeling an orange...you still have oranges in the Riverland with the current River Murray water restrictions??Produced from 1982 to 2001.Catalog price in 2001 was $55.95 so quite expensive little critter! Mostly produced with nickel silver bolsters some had brass bolsters also.Schrade + Stainless Steel blades. I havnt seen any with serial numbers unlike LB7.
Off this topic Paul, Did you receive that Craftsman 2OT yet and if so what about a photo as its one of the scarcest Old Timer knives ever produced. Hoo Roo
