I saw a Schrade offering today in one of our local retailers...it was a Schrade 3 blade slippy...about a mid-sized stockman, wood, perhaps cocobola, w/old style bolsters, the kind w/a single line stamped into in, the knife was enclosed in a wood case w/an unusual wood flap for a lid. The wood has what appears to be a wood burned image of something to do w/Lewis and Clark. There was a medallion included w/the offering. Anyone have any info on these? Whats the opinions on its future collectability. Good buy for $50 or so? Codger, what do you think??? Larry??? I am a bit surprised what w/the 200 yr celebrations centered mostly here in Montana of the Expedition that these are still for sale...makes me doubt their worth???? Seems like a $20 knife wrapped up in a $50 package....am I wrong?

The only one I saw that sold on Ebay went for $25.

To define 'Collectible' can I say 'potential for future increase in value'?

Some commemoratives really are collectible, and some are not. For example, the Schrade Kenturcky Rifle (widely thought to be the first limited edition commemorative) sold by AG Russell, currently sells for $50-60 (original issue price was $12 in 1972. Another example given by Bruce Voyles in his very good Commemorative Knives book would be the first reissues of the Remington Bullets, from I think 1982-- and that first one can go for $400. Many others, brought out since the 'collectible' thing began in the late 70s, have yet to reach thier issue price.

It's my opinion that the market price for 'Lewis & Clark' commemoratives-- of all sorts, and there were many-- is low now. Future: A crapshoot. Just my take on it, and if I were always right, I'd be very wealthy.

This would be a great topic for a thread... What does make a true collectible?

Phil

The knife wasen't much but the medallions are nice. They are however kind of hard to find by themselves.

Sorry them damn things have been sitting around for ever this is the first use I had for them I could not resist. It was rather childish (er goo goo ). LT
